Default 02 wrx intercooler vs. 06 07 wrx intercooler

I have heard the 06 wrx intercooler is a little bit smaller in size compared to the 02/03. I heard they were not as deep from front throttle body to the rear. Is this true? If it is, will it not support as much flow as compared to the earlier 02 03 style?

I have an 02/03 and it was a tight fit getting it on, specifically getting past the pinch weld at the top of the firewall. I had to take the plastic cowel off and trim it back a little to get past it, but once it's in it doesn't hit anything.

The problem is after installing the groupN motor mounts, it changed the engine position just enough to make the intercooler impossible to get back on. So I had to do some more trimming on the pinch weld and barely got it on. So I'm thinking if the 06/07 style is not quite as deep, and doesn't sacrifice flow/power potential, I would switch.

Any thoughts? Anyone measure them and know for sure? And no I'm not going front mount, so please don't suggest that.

Thanks for any help on this!

they are thinner, but i would seriously suggest a FXT TMIC. I had one off an 04' I was going to use on my 96 ej18t but went fmic, its thinner then the 02/03 wrx ones and its black and looks purty cool.

they might be the same as the fxt ones. might want to look into an IC spray.

Yeah I knew the FXT was a skinny one, and I have seen it on a couple rigs. I heard they were really limited for power potential. I'm after the 06 wrx style hoping it is only a little smaller without losing power potential. I only need like 1/4" to 1/2" more clearance. I can't come any closer to the throttle body because i'm about an 1/8'' away from the throttle linkage.

I am really thinking about FMIC, but I just got my car back together after this 05' LGT tranny swap and the wife would kill me if I was tearing my car back apart after only 2 days I have some house projects to get caught up on, and going FMIC is too big a project right now.

What FMIC are you using?

im using some ebay china fmic for a gc8, it fits ****ty so alot of cutting needs to be done and since im using a blow-through setup + a atomspheric BOV its alittle hacked up and my bumper looks kinda ghetto but from a distance you cant tell.

im running 7 lbs and at night the cold side piping is cold after a thorough beating which is impressive since the piping quality isnt that great. but during the day both hot/cold side are HOT however the intercooler only gets hot on one side regardless of temps.a tmic is basicially a heat soak!!
