Looking at an '09 Legacy 2.5i
Hello all, I am hoping to receive some of your expertise in the world of Subaru. I have already read the FAQ postings and feel this will be a relevant (and new topic) that will hopefully assist new potentials owners of Subaru's.
I am trying to get rid of my 04 Tundra 4x4 in favor of better gas mileage and handling. I am moving to Sacramento and am anticipating many trips to the mountains and do not want to deal with chain control (and overall safety driving on mountain roads).
I have been looking for used Subaru Legacy's and bottom line: there are very few, and they are priced quite high when you compare the cost of a new one. This tells me two things:
1. Current owners do not want to get rid of their Legacy's
2. They hold their value extremely well
I am still torn between a 2.5i or 2.5 GT, the difference in fuel being ~$1000/year from what I can determine. I am also looking at a much higher purchase price of a vehicle of that nature.
Lets examine the 2.5i for a minute. Drove it and loved it - relatively stock, homelink mirror with compass and the new Harmon Kardon Stereo (which comes stock, I have read that the older stereos leave a lot to be desired - this one sounded quite good). Power could have been more, but thats what you get for a N/A motor. Sticker was 21,900, dealership was willing to go to 20,900. They offered me $10,500 for my Tundra, KBB is 17, I feel fairly confident I could sell it for 13-15K.
Besides all of that, do you feel $20,900 is a good deal or should I try to find a used suby? Dealer invoice on edmunds.com is 20,600. Other than a few bolt on mods I want to get (roof rack, mats, fog lights, maybe satellite radio) (should I try to find one with all the mods I want or buy them aftermarket?), it seems like a fairly good deal.
I apologize if this is fairly long winded but I need some experts to help me out with my dilemma. Thanks so much all.
Your soon to be Subaru owner.

$20,900 is good, dealers don't have to haggle much on the Legacy, someone will buy it.
Your trade is the problem, I would not be ok with that kind of difference in the deal. Selling it yourself may get more, it just may take a while because everyone else is doing what you are doing. If you can get at least 13K for your truck you'll be much better off.
In my recent search I found the same as you: used prices are so high, new is a reasonable option. I purchased an '08 and got all the incentives ($1500 off invoice and 0%), which allowed me to step up to a Limited.
Nice choice, good luck, welcome to the family (eventually).
