Default ecu help

first i need to find the damn thing, im a wrench turner not an electrician. along with my replacing electrical things, i was looking into replacing the ecu.... were is it ?

second, i have a 97 impreza outback sport wagon. do i have to get the computer out of the same car ? are there different ecu options ? could i just grab one out of another impreza ?

it is under the carpeting on the passenger side footwell. And im pretty sure you can use one from a 96-01 impreza as long as its the same size motor. You can always pull the carpet up, and remove the cover and find the ECU model number and then you can check it before you buy one.
