Default 60,000 mile service

Well, I am getting closer to my 60,000 mile service time. Here is what the local subie dealer wants to charge me:

Insp/Replace drive belts (parts only) $28.28
Camshaft drive belt (includes labor) $241.95
Lube oil filter $24.99
Replace coolant (1 gallon) $37.00
Inspect fuel system, replace filter $53.58
Air Filter $14.95
Spark Plugs $104.00
Manual Transmission/ diff fluid $35.90
Brake fluid $41.61
Inspect brake lining and axle boots $29.99
Inspect parking brake linings/drums $27.00
Clutch and hill holder $16.20

GRAND TOTAL $655.45

Now ... am I the only one who thinks that price is kinda high? I mean, half of what they are doing if just 'inspecting' things ... I'm sure they'd love to charge me more for bad drivers seat bearings, and headlight fluid.

I really need to get a place with a garage... and sell this car when the warranty runs out.

Those must be some special spark plugs!

And how much is brake fluid? $5.00 for a big bottle? Give me a break. At least they will inspect your hill holder.

Yeah.. $104 for spark plugs? Give me a break. And the tranny/diff fluid is $35? That's right about what I paid for Mobil 1 stuff only.

I dunno man, I'd do as much as you possibly can and then pay to have the rest done.

I would just do the work yourself. None of the stuff in that list is very difficult. The hardest thing will be the cam belt and even that isn't too hard if you take your time.

Yeah, I don't know what's up with the spark plugs. The price for a 2.2 liter engine for spark plugs is $38.32 ...

Question Hill Holder??

Does the 98 RS even have a hill holder?? My fiancee's 97 Outback doesn't have one. I thought they eliminated that feature. (as much as I loved it when I was learning to dive stick in high school!! ) Also the plug price is waayyyyyyy off. It would be cheaper for you to buy the sockets needed and the plugs and do it yourself. It took me like 20 minutes or so. All you need to do is reove the windshield washer resevoir and move the intake tube out of the way and you are in business. Use the NGK copper plugs. They cost like $2-3 apiece. Good luck!!!

Default Timing belt change is not due until 105k

Timing belt change is not due until 105k miles. That's $242 saved right there.

I confirmed with SOA that timing belt can be in service that long. It is also in the owner's manual.

List price for the spark plugs is $28 each. So you can see why they want $104 to replace them. You can either go with Denso K16R-U11 (confirmed with Denso) or buy NGK PFR5B-11 from a number of places for about $10 each. The copper Densos are about $1.49 each...

The rest of this stuff looks reasonable.
