Default Tire Recommendation coming from Azenis 215's

Hey all, I have been doing some research for tires, but i still can't decide on what i want. I am running a Falken Azenis 215 in 225/45/17 on a 7.5" Rota Action wheel. I am open to the idea of going up to a 245 40 17, but I'm not sure what that would look like. I have a tendency to drive really hard from time to time, so I need something that can really keep up. My priorities are:

Dry Grip
Noise level
Turn in
Cost

Honestly I have been running the Azenis on the street now for a whole year, and love their grip, but their tire noise is just getting a bit old. Inclement weather performance isn't really a priority for me. The two tires that have been recommended to me are the Falken 452's and Kumho SPT's. Suggestions?

Luke, I like all of those and thanks for the suggestions, but they all are a tad out of my price range.

I have 452's and like them quite well.... Had 3 set of Kumho 712's and LOVED them, but never the SPT....

I was going to get SPT's and they weren't available at the time, so I went with the 452's, I like them well enough...

The Kook rs2 z212 or the new Falken 615s fit that price range. Probably not as good as the new super tires like the Dunlops, Stones, or Yok's, but still great street tires, for cheap.

anyone have commentary on whether I should change from a 225/45 to a 235/40 or a 245/40?

Ooh, that's a pretty nice price range. So, say you're willing to spend $600 on a set of tires. If I were in your shoes, I'd definitely up that to being willing to spend $650 on a set and purchase a set of the dunlop z1 star specs from tirerack. That's in 245/40/17 and I believe that's the price after shipping. I was recently purchasing tires also and that's what I wish I had done. If you don't want to spend quite that much, I certainly also recommend the R-S2 from hankook for dry performance that also handles rain quite well(what I finally decided on) or the falken rt615, which has a slight edge on the R-S2 in the dry but is very iffy in the wet. Both of which can be had from edgeracing pretty cheap. All that being said, I'd really consider adding fifty bucks to your budget and ordering the dunlop from luke as the z1 star specs are the tire to have right now (wish I'd have gone this route after everything's said and done.) Hope this helps.

Being an STi driver where 245/40's are the most popular, I'm not completely sure what size most wrx guys are running. If I remember properly though, the 235's are the tire that gets along best with wrx gearing.

245/40 is OK on a WRX, but it should be on 8" wide rims, and the rear fender lips need to be folded in. Mine rubbed until I did that. Most will rub.

Since the OP put " turn in " as one of his priorities, I wouldn't recommend 245, because on a 7" rim, " turn in" is going to feel slower than if it was a 225.

I've got the Hankook RS2s and like them. I used to have RT-215. The Hankooks are MUCH quieter. You can still hear them, but they don't sound like all my wheel bearings are fried like it did when I had the Azenis.

For just driving on the street any of the tires mentioned (except the Kumho 712! offer more than enough grip)

UPDATE: the Dunlops seem to be in your price range:

I had the Hankook RS-2s and then got the Azeni RT-615s now its time for another set.
I have to say, the Azenis at 225/45/17 are just as wide as the 235/40/17 RS-2s I had. They are just a tad louder but nothing to complain about. The most influencing factor I think is what I experienced towards the end of the life of the tire. The hankooks were absolutely horrible when near the indicators, the car was just dangerous driving in the rain and even taking twisties at high speeds in the dry! The azenis that I have now are near the indicators and they drive just fine compared to the RS-2s at the same mileage. Also, a week after I got the RS-2s I went auto-crossing and after just 2 runs the tires started chunking real bad, even spraying them between runs!

I'm actually thinking of just buying the 615 Azenis again!

Just get 615s. They will be most like what you've got now. The 615 is just an improved 215.

I never heard anyone say these are loud. You are talking about noise when driving down the road, right and not about tire screeching noise from cornering at speed.

Compared to worn RT-215 any of the tires recommended will be MUCH quieter and I would expect them all to ride better as well.

For a bargain get the Azenis; for the latest technology & performance at a good price, the Dunlop are getting great reviews.

The other tires here are in a different price range, but also excellent tires. Pick what fits your budget. If you see a LOT of rain, the Azenis are probably not the best choice.

Some others to compare against the number 1 pick right now (the Dunlop Z1 Star Spec) and what the Azenis 215's that I had:

Sumitomo HTR Z III
Yokohama S. Drive.

Thoughts?

Definitely a step down in performance compared to the other sticky street tires.

So a revision on what I will be looking at. After talking with a bunch of people, for now I think I will go with a milder tire ~300 Treadwear. So the ones I'm thinking of right now are:

Sumitomo HTR Z III
Falken FK-452
Yokohama S. Drive
