Repair 4EAT Tranny

Hi,

The 4EAT auto tranmission on my 1995 2.2 AWD Impreza seems to be dying. At least that was what the Subaru Dealer claims when I brought it in to be checked.

He says they can't fix it, but will happily replace it.

The car is in all wheel drive all the time. When I stick in the fuse to force the car to run as 2 wheel drive, the 2WD warning light does not come on.

The car shudders in slow speed tight turns.

Does this sound like a transmission problem?

Does anyone have any experience with taking an Impreza to a national chain tranmission shop and have them rebuild the transmission. I am worried that in Miami they won't know anything about Subarus and I will end up worse off.

Any suggestions welcome,

The shuddering in slow, tight turns is a transfer clutch problem. I know as my '92 SVX had the same problem about three months back. This part of the trans can be serviced by a Subaru dealer for about $1000. You can TRY to extend the life of the trnasfer clutches by bedding them in by doing slow, tight figure 8's. This may help, but it sounds as if yours may be too far gone for this to help.
