my 02 failed without a lit cel, it had cels when you checked for codes tho

get a code reader and check for codes first - if you fail emissions, you'll get a nasty letter from teh state that may jeopardize your ability to get a valid registration tag

And if you have codes, dont clear them and go right in for the inspection. Wait a couple days to let the readiness monitors set themselves.

it may take longer than that

my 02 had to go over 200 miles before everything reset

A code reader other than the AP? like the one they have at Autozone?

What if I reset my ECU (by disconnecting the battery) right before doing the test?

^^ it'll clear the codes but then you'll have to drive for a few days until it resets

go to vatozone and have them check the codes

don't they still do that for free?

Before i had a code reader they always cleared it for me after giving me the guilt trip of how they arent supposed to do it.

I'm pretty sure you are right, but the one near me clear codes like it's nothing. Heck they usually have one out to let you borrow it to do it yourself.
