What's up guys?
I picked up a Cobb 3" cat-back from Passen Motorsports here in Columbus, Ohio. The exhaust is very good quality and fits perfectly even with the rear diff. protector. The sound is great! It is somewhat mellow at idle. Sounds deep and rumbly when you push on the fun pedal. The car definately feels like it has picked up power in the mid and high rpm range. The ol' buttometer says something to the tune of 15-20HP. As you know, buttometers aren't that accurate but that is my take on it. In summary, it is a great exhaust, fits perfectly and gives great gains. If your close to Columbus, Passen Motorsports can hook you up with Cobb products and they were great to deal with. Later, Dale

Are you sure about a 15-20 hp gain with just a catback? I was thinking more along the lines of maybe `2 to 5 hp. With a turboback exhaust, you'd probably be seeing 15 - 20 hp.

If it was only a 2-5HP gain, I would of never even felt it. I've been doing this a long time and I can tell quite a substantial difference in the car. I would say at least 15HP.

This unit is on my exhaust shortlist, and I'm wondering if anyone else has opinions on the Cobb. I'm also looking at the Stromung.
Thanks! |

I've seen the Cobb catback on MysteryMachine's ride and it is one sweet sounding exhaust. Mind you, he's got an upgraded turbo and a Graham Goode uppipe with the Cobb catback. I could hear him start his car from the back of a building when he was parked out in front. Boxer engine sounds are perfect with his setup. I think he's actually thinking of getting a different exhaust, so you should PM him and see if he's willing to part with it.

He said he wants something a "little" louder. He mentioned the Kakimoto GT exhaust. Just a sound difference I guess. Nothing wrong and no problems with the Cobb unit.

I also have the Cobb cat-back. The sound is great, fit and finish is excellent. 10-15 HP gain? I don't think so. If it were anywhere near this amount don't you think Cobb would be using it to their advantage and advertise that fact? At best I would say 5-7 hp increase with the stock DP and cats. With an aftermarket DP and the cats removed you may see a much greater gain if compared to the stock cat-back.

I am planning on buying the cobb from Santa Cruz Subaru for about 600, catback. They have it in stock and will install it for about 47.00 and seems like a good system...sounded good on the demo, nice looking, doesn't look like a melon launcher and keeps the original look of the double pipes that the wrx came with. I don't know about the horsepower change. anything that is not the constrictive stock pipes has to be better. bigger is better right? they had a stromung but no cat back pipes. just the muffler. so i guess Cobb it will be. Any other suggestions. please let me know.

If I'm not mistaken, Cobb DOES say a 10-15hp gain.
I have removed the 3rd cat, so maybe that is where the difference is. 5-7hp is not that noticeable. http://www.rallyperformance.com/exhaust%20mods%202.htm That is a link where a 11whp gain is shown with a scoobysport muffler section. Granted it isn't the exact same car we have, but it is similiar. I think a 10-15hp gain is not that far off. Maybe my car is an over achiever. ![]() |

ah! you have the third cat removed! that would make a big difference!
i too have the cobb cat back and am very happy with it, its sound impresses everyone i rev the motor for, in and out of the car, and there's a decent increase in power over 5000 rpm. i'm not gonna speculate with numbers, my buttdyno isnt very accurate! mark |

Installation was a breeze. If you can change your own oil, you can install the cat-back. It's a direct bolt on replacement. Make sure you use jack stands. You might also need an extra long 3/8" extension for the upper bolt of the muffler section.

It's funny that you ask that. I installed an ATR up-pipe yesterday. The install is a PITA but the gains are noticeable and worth it. The turbo spools up slightly quicker and it pulls harder on the top too. Word of advice: Make sure you replace the gasket between the up-pipe and manifold.

Good choice Dale. It's either Cobb, or ScoobySport for me. I'd like to hear yours before deciding. Hit me up sometime. I hang at Passen from time to time.

What are Cobb Cat back owners doing to get Turbo back? I got an email from Cobb saying that I should contact Stromung for the downpipe (which I have...no reply yet).
When I first purchsed the Cobb system they told me it would mate up with the APS stuff. Now that story is changed. Like to know what others are planning to do, or have done. |
