Thumbs down Thank GOD for my free subscription to Car & Driver!

The latest issue not only contains self-aggrandizing motor-heads editorializing about ethanol and ANWR (you don't see the "Economist" evaluating the Skyline, chumps), but they were kind enough to clue me in on the latest awesome "Web Finds!" You guys should totally check out this guy "Bub Rub" and his whistle tips! Or some guy jumping his Sidekick over a dirt ramp! It's new and awesome!

My friend had a "Buy 1 get one free" subscription a couple of years ago. He asked me if I wanted it and I said "Sure!". This year, I was almost upset with him when he renewed my subscription for me. Thanks Frank...

I lost all faith in any bit of credibility C&D had when they actually put the M3 in first place in a comparo with a Skyline and 911 Turbo. There is no way they can convince me that they don't have an obvious BMW bias.

C/D has had those kind of editorials for ages, actually they are quite toned down nowadays since Brock Yates left/retired/was pushed out.

I thought I'd see a more glowing endorsement of this month's issue since the GT-R won the comparo of cars I'll never be able to afford versus the Corvette, Porsche and Viper. See, nepawrx already commented on it, but is still sore.

I thought the letter to the editor from the guy at BMW about the move from 2002 Hogback Road was funny, for the "BMW bias" people. Previous incantations of the bias have been "Japanese" and, more specifically, "Honda".

Do they still have some crappy American car "winning" the car of the year competition every year? Which magazine was it that awarded the PT Cruiser the car of the year award? That immediately ruined any and all credibility they possibly had. The PT Cruiser I got as a rental last year was THE most godawful piece of **** I've ever driven. It had no power, giant blind spots, poor handling, poor ergonomics, and just generally half-ass design all around. You cannot tell me anyone anywhere is dumb enough to vote that thing "Car of the year" without someone giving them a considerable sum of money for doing so.

Keep in mind the PT Cruiser is rather long in the tooth at this point, and also keep in mind it was quite revolutionary when it came out, a very distinctive design that the dealers could not keep in stock. A lot of other "retro" designs followed it. Although I won't disagree that it is a POS to live with (a friend had one), it did definitely make a big splash.

Also, the 300C was a similar design exercise that breathed life back into the large RWD car segment.

And Motor Trend awards "Car of the Year", C/D does 10 Best. Every year, piles of people whine and bitch that the wrong ten were chosen. And C/D most definitely doesn't have much love for crappy American machinery. If it's good (Cadillac's latest stuff, Corvette, G8, etc), they'll tell you about it, but if it's crap they generally come out and say so.

No, that's Motor Trend, cow.

And I saw the same thing, oh Chiseled One. While incredibly douchechilly, I don't read C&D to keep up on the latest internet memes, so I let it fly.

I think you mean Motor Trend......which awards "car of the year" to every car in production that has advertised in the mag in the previous year.

I got a combination Car & Driver and Road & Track subscription about a year ago as the combo was only about a dollar more than the single subscription. I won't do that again.....since they're run by the same company, it's pretty obvious that they get the same cars to test at the same time....borrow results from each other and......well.....write the exact same articles with different authors. I'm letting them run out and getting Guitar Player instead.

The one guy in C&D made a good point in his column this past month re: gas prices.

He basically pointed out that the weakening dollar has had just as bad of an effect on gas prices as the price of crude.

I'd wager to say that half of the people who read that magazine were unaware before reading it in his column... my dad included.

They don't pick a car of the year last time I checked. Only a "10 Best" list.

You mean like this:
  • We didn't like how the plastic felt to our sensitive fingers! Too hard! Owie!
  • T3h BMW R0x0rz, 'cept iDrive. DO NOT WANT iDrive!
  • In this comparison, we acknowledge the inferior test results of the winner, but we choose it anyway, because it's a BMW... but damn the iDrive!
  • Mazdaspeed3... somethingsomething Pocket Rocket somethingsomething Hot Hatch.

It was a horrible article. It could have been written by a highschool senior whose only research into the issue was 8 hours in front of a pair of televisions watching Fox News and MSNBC.

Yeah, they always choose the BMW and then write the article around the choice to make it seem like it was the only logical choice. This recent time when they chose the M3 over the GTR and 911 Turbo, they asked what car would you own if you could only own one ultimate car for the rest of your life... which meant they had to put more weight on comfort and so-called livability.

Next Issue, we rate fourteen cars, from the GT3 to the Viper, to determine which takes top honors if you're looking for a German-made performance sedan!

That was by far the most ridiculous case of over-the-top BMW favoritism to date.

I mean... both of those cars absolutely mauled the M3.

That article? I honestly didn't think I remembered it correctly and was going to go back and reread it. Now I remember it, and you are right it was depressingly quixotic.
