Default Rebadged WRX rumor grows again

About 2 months ago I heard from a GM source that Pontiac was considering bringing
out a re-badged WRX in its lineup. I posted it in this forum.

Didn't hear much else about it for a while, but now AutoWeek (Feb 18, 2002; page 13)
also predicts a rebadged WRX for GM. My GM source says that the plan is still alive.

Something to keep an eye on.

From where I sit, this is great news. As there is only one Subaru dealer in my entire home state of North Dakota, and I am always on the road, and usually in the most backwater locations possible (ever been to Circle, Montana?), this could mean more easily available parts. Not that I'd be really comfortable with having a GM tech in Bumwater, Wyoming working on my car, but I suppose it would still be better than having work done at Billy Bob's friendly corner gas station/Video rental store. Normally I'd only have any work done on my car at an auth. Subie place, but one never knows when an alternator or etcetera is going to let go, right? Of course, the negative is tha our cars credibility will get watered down somewhat, but who knows, maybe with Lutz at GM, a Pontiac version will be more, or a lot more, agressive looking and/or better looking than our Subaru version. Oh, and IMHO, if there is a Pontiac WRX, Mr. Lutz will be the driving force behind it as he's an avowed car nut. Mixed feelings I guess. My .02.

Did Autoweek say anything else about what will be changed/what will be tweaked?

Well for starters, if Pontiac makes it they will add body cladding, and lots of it.

No matter which GM company makes it, expect these changes:

1) Reprogrammed ECU to make engine convieniently go to **** after warranty expires. If automatic transmission used, TCU programmed to do the same thing. If manual, they will use the pressure plate/clutch assembly from a 98 RS. Synchros will be designed to ensure a long life of 50,000 miles.

2) Interior: All current plastic will be removed and replaced with GM "Quality" Plastic.
Seats will be changed to have almost no side bolstering at all.

3) If Chevy makes it, Z555 badges will be added to both sides and the rear.

4) A live-axle rear suspension. You want IRS? Why?? Gonna have to pay.

Just a couple of points. I've read a few interviews in the automotive press which contradict your point about the body cladding. Per the division manager, the next generation of Pontiacs will not have body cladding, which I suspect Mr. Bob Lutz had some say in (check out the pics of Lutz's new pet project, the Solstice, at Autoweek online-- no cladding -- oh and BTW the Solstice uses WRX steering gear). I also have to disagree about the interior plastics. If you compare the Vibe and the Toyota Matrix, the interiors are identical, and use the Toyota materials with Toyota levels of fit-and-finish --even though I still think the design's a little tacky and immature looking). As to switching to a live axle, the redesign and refitting costs would be more than leaving the IRS as is. I suspect you wrote your post tongue-in-cheek, but just responded in case any people thought you were serious. Signed, no defender of GM, but a defender of the truth.

Unfortunately, GM will have a say in it too as they now own a stake in Subaru...It would make more sense to me if they did do it if they did it as a Saturn...seems to me Saturn doesn't have the same stigma attached to it as the other GM divisions. My .02.

From FHI's 5 year business plan dated May 2000:
"North America

- Strengthen three mainstay models (full model changes, horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, introduction of turbo models, etc.)
- Launch a 4-door pick-up based on Legacy (Starting 2002)
- Product exchange with GM
- Subaru dealer development supported by GM
- Utilization of GM expertise, systems and infrastructures (automobile loans: GMAC, internet: e-GM) "

02? Impreza WRX?
Aspen White/ Sedona Red?

Question good news...maybe.

Well, if GM does choose to bring the WRX into the GM line-up, I certainly hope they would leave it intact. If so, I would buy it. I get a GM discount (albeit a small one). If they changed it, or watered it down, then screw it. No way. I would spend the extra for Subaru. Furthermore, I belive it would improve the image of Gm in the tuner market. Listen, having a 200+ HP compact tuner would do wonders for their image. In turn, GM and other companies would be encouraged by sales to continue on that path. Sounds like a good deal to me. Just keep the Rex intact, and all will be well.

GM is pathetic. I realize their investment dollars are probably helping our little Subaru move along, but GM's vehicles are horrible compared to their competition. I include i-Club sacred untouchable cow, the Z06, in that mix.. (The Z06 would be a great $35k car, but not $50k+)

I would guess GM would not simply rebadge a WRX, but I could see them taking the Impreza chassis and drivetrain for their own, wonderous Aztekian destruction..

Pontiac sucks, i hope they dont get a version of the wrx.. i dont care how much money subaru and FHI makes with that deal, subaru would lose my respect for it..and it would take some of the individuality and other positive incentives to owning my wrx away i think..Like haing to pull up next to a Pontiac version of my car would be traumatic enough

on car and driver (tv) last weekend they showed a bunch of one off concept cars. One was an AWD pontiac - but it had like 300 hp, I think. They said it was prolly going to get to market (close to those specs).

Default It looks like it will happen...

If anyone here has read the article: http://www.autoweek.com/cat_content...._code=01596669

about the pair of Ponitac Solstace's it mentions that the rack and pinion steering unit came from the WRX.

Also the article backs up "jrotten's" statements about lack of future body cladding.

I know a few folks at the GM Tech Center and there is definately a turn around in progress. It started before Lutz, but I think he has some good ideas that will contribute favorably. If anyone has paid attention to the concept cars and the all new GM cars on the way there is several refreshing (in GM terms anyway) cars on the way.

Whow there, the z06 made car of the year from several magazines including Automobile Magazine. Can you think of another car that does 0-60 in 3.9 stock and costs under 100grand? It's out handled even the greatest performance legends, killed the "new" NSX by 2 seconds on the track if I remember correctly in a recent magazine article. Hold back on the ignorance there kido.

Default I can see it now!

The "brand" new Pontiac Grand Am GTP AWD, after GM makes the Imprezza line the new Grand Ams and stripps them of thier AWD ( in the lower models, makes um cheaper), and thier dignity.

Subarus getting tied up, and its gonna start looking like a japanese porn, gross Americans doing unnatural things to the poor little bound asian.
