Default brake and battery light on, but no issues

2000 2.5rs, with more than 225k miles.
My wife was driving to work, leaving just after me. She calls me on the cell to say the cars battery light and brake light were on at start up.
She only has about a 2 mile drive to work. I stop and look at the car briefly as I had to get to work myself.
Both the brake and battery light come on. There was no loss in power, or loss of any functions.
Alternator was turning and the belt seems fine. If you pull the ebrake, the brake light gets brighter than if the ebrake is off. Brake fluid is fine and clean.
Check engine light is on, but was on previously(cat efficiency, yadda yadda).
I didn't have anything to test if the alt crapped out....even if it did, why is the brake light on?
Battery was new early this spring.
We have had heavy rain the last couple of days and car hasn't been used.....so I'm wondering if it might just be a random electrical gremlin.

Any ideas?

Went home for lunch and put a meter on the car. 95% sure the alt is dead. Checked the fuse and it was still good. Not sure why it puts the "ebrake" light on though.
Any tricks to changing alt on a subie, looks like an overly complex setup holding in place.

disconnect (-) on battery, disconnect plugs on alt, take off belt, take out alt. you have to wiggle it a bit to get it out/in. it may seem like you have to take off the PS or AC brackets, but you don't, it will work.

Hey OP, I did a search and found a couple of threads that might be useful info for your situation:

Hope it helps a little.

A busted alternator can lead to weird current flow. Chances are there aren't any diodes on the brake light circuit so there's some sort of 'backflow' of current. I wouldn't worry about it unless it's still on once the new alternator is in.

Thanks for the heads up. I was looking at the A/c compressor wondering if that had to come off in the process or not. Everything appears to be a tight fit.
Time to order up an alternator.

definately the alternator is gone......had the same problem on my 97 legacy....only takes about 15 minutes to change including cleaning up the battery terminals

ebrake light goes on when you're low on brake fluid, but I guess you checked.

yep, it was the alt. Went pretty quick. Much easier than it looked at first.
Only problem was the new alt was touch too tight on its mounting tabs; so I had to grind it a touch to make it fit better.

Of course, I just about had a coronary, when I started it up and the dash lights started blinking on and off. Swearing to myself for a few minutes until I realized I needed to reset the keyless entry mechanism.
All works well.

Glad to hear it was a fairly simple fix.
