Default Track vs Street wheels and tires

While I'm no competitor on the track just yet, I'd like to consider all options. I'm am upgrading my suspesion to the RCE Tarmac 2's most likely. And with that I plan on moving up to a 9inch tire. As of now I am about 85% daily driver, 15% track (with hopes of soon upping that track percentage).

Now I am torn whether or not to go with the 17x9 or 18x9. Weight and cost are the biggest issues. Although I don't see myself picking my lap times apart because of a wheel thats 2 lbs heavier, I still want to have a strong, yet nice-looking setup.

It seems silly, as of now, for me to get a set of 18s for the look, and a set of 17s for the track. If I turn into a course/auto-x junkie then maybe that will be an option I could consider. Now, I am just looking for an all around street/track performer. The wheels don't need to be super light, but I'd rather them not be in the 19lb range. I'm not real familiar with wheel weights, but I'm sure either a 17x9 or 18x9 will be considerably heavier than say a 7.5.

I suppose this whole process brings me to the Rotas being that they are nice looking wheels at a great price, yet still can perform on the track. Whether you feel this is the case or not, give me your two cents. I'd appreciate it, thanks!

I vote a nice 17x9. IMO the 18 isn't going to change the look very much and is only going to increase wheel weight/increase cost of tires.

Especially with the fact that you'll have coilovers. You won't need gigantic wheels to fill the wheel well.

The cost of tire is the huge factor here.....17s are a much better choice for track duty, The tire selection is often times better as well.

I'm really leaning towards the 17x9 based on cost and rideability. I just really wish I could see what 17x9 g-forces or Tarmac III's look like on a car w/ coilovers. Thanks for the opinions thus far - keep it rollin'

Edit - Looks like Rota doesn't make a 17x9. I hope I'm not just limited to the Advan and Volk wheels. Any other recommendations for wheels, or tires for that matter? Thanks again

Why not run 16's? That addresses your biggest issues (weight and cost).

Hard to beat a set of 16 X 8's (with 245's or 255's) for a track junkie with a WRX. Cheap wheels, cheap tires, light, etc. You can even go wider if you feel the need. But it gets harder stuffing more than a 255 under there anyway depending on your setup.

Awesome customer service!

These sizes and offsets are customer orders! Which is why you probably didnt see that Rota made them.

Why not split the difference and get a 17x8.5? On the lowest price end you could go with Rota Slipstreams. Another good option that's reasobaly priced are the TR Motorsports MT-1 from TireRack. Am am pretty sure they're offered in 17x8.5 +48 5x100.

I have these as a backup set of track wheels but have a widebody car. With standard fenders and anything larger than a 245 I think you'd have serious fender clearance issues. I run mine with 275's.
