News Latest TireRack test: Dunlop Star Spec #1

did a quick check and did not see this posted previously in either this forum or Motorsports:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...y.jsp?ttid=107

The Dunlop's top-rating is not really surprising given the praise Luke and others have heaped on this tire since it's release - still nice to see the numbers and very nice to see the excellent wet performance from a dry-biased extreme performance tire. now if only they were in stock...

How long are these tires lasting when used in HPDE & autoX events, compared to Kumho MX, RE01R, Azenis RT615, etc.

Neat. It seems to be a pretty competitive segment.

I do wonder why the RS-2 was tested in this group. I know it's used a bit in auto-x and well liked over the RT-615 in wet, but I've never thought of it quite at the same level. I would think the 615 would be a better comparison tire for this segment. I just can't comment on either too much. I've never driven a car with these tires installed, only ridden in, but overall grip and unique indicators were noticeable in my rides. The RS-2 would be far, far more comparable to the Kuhmo SPT which is a Ultra High Performance Summer tire. Even test results but them pretty much on par with each other, the RS-2 a hair better dry, SPT a hair better wet, both same overall score and relative performance and grip levels.

For wet scores, look at what Goodyear has. Look at the Eagle F1 Asymmetrical. In the wet, it's better than any of the above tested Max Performance tires. Goodyear has always seemed to do water and ice performance very, very well. Dry grip just isn't quite there comparatively but not really way behind either.

I have done 2 full weekends on these tires at Mid-Ohio, I havent checked the exact tread on them now, but there is plenty of meat left on them right now. I unfortunatly dont have experience with the tires you listed. I can check the tread depth if you are interested

I've been playing phone tag with luke about these tires!

What I want to know is the tread width on a 255/35 vs. the REO1R 255/35. There's no posted data that I can find on tread width for the direzza's.

anybody have some insight?

(i like the fact the direzza's are cheaper too)

From the treadwear rating and user reviews it sounds like the Dunlops are going to last longer and perform equally if not better than the RE01R while being $50/tire cheaper. That = a lot of win and unfortunately impossible to find.

That's what I've read......a couple of odd posts here and there in various threads.

I hope it's true..........cause that would be great.......but I hope it's not the opposite

I have the non star spec Z1's and I like them alot. I imagine that they star specs are even better. I've been to 3 auto crosses with em and they still look new. They are also very sticky on wet and dry pavement

Thanks. I'm wondering about the long term. Do they wear more like a Toyo RA1, Nitto 01R ( teh longer lasting R comps) or do they wear more like the Hankook RS2, which I have tracked a couple times & also my brother has on a 325i bmw, and seem to last forever on track. I'm on RA1s now, but might move to street tires for longer lasting.

I've seen the RE01R's and have an idea they wear pretty quick. Dunlop sounds like it might be a decent alternative to an Rcomp for HPDE.

And it looks like they have a 255/40-17 now. Can't get those in Hankooks..

My RE01Rs will last quite some time. They seem to actually wear quite well, have a year on mine so far.
