Default WTH happened to my subie?

I think my transmission died, I had the torque bind issue with my car since I got it.

But a few days ago, I experienced a weak reverse..the car would rumble/hop while going backwards in reverse.

now today, it does the same in D/3/2/1. I was driving at 20mph out of a parking lot and the transmission stopped engaging, and the RPM would almost redline and not engage so the car pretty much idles to a stop, till I have to restart it, put it in D and see if it'd move forward by pressing the gas, thent hat'd work for a few meters then it'd die out again until I restart. Sometimes it took multiple restarted to go a few more feet.

Transmission is shot, isn't it?

Well yeah, of course it'd be fun. But 3K+ for that setup = more then my car cost.

So, FTL.

I think I'm just going to grab another transmission and slap it in. And keep this one out and have it rebuilt or something.

it MIGHT just be the torque converter that let go... then again it might be some more expensive 'bits'. Have you checked your ATF fluid ??? What does it look like ?

When I checked ATF Fluid a few mins after I turned the car off it's in the HOT section so I assume thats normal for the fluid..
the weird part is when I just checked it, and the car has been off for 12+hours its in the same location a bit over hot.

have you messed with the engine at all lately? replaced an air filter? taken out the snorkus? last time i had the problem you're describing it ended up being a loose vaccum line on the intake arm.

No, it just died on me in the parking lot. Stop doing anything, and its as if the car is in N in any position.

Sometimes it may engage. Alot of times it dosen't.

was driving down the highway going about 55mph, and was going up a hill and when the engine went to downshift to get up the hill, it shifted out of gear and the engine just reved up. I pulled off the highway and tried just about everything to get it going, no luck. It wouldn't go into Reverse, Drive, 1st or 2nd gear... basically nothing. When you take it out of Park and move the needle to a gear, you can't feel or hear any change like you normally do when you shift into gear.
Quote:
suddenly my RPM was
at 5000. The car shifted out of gear on its own. I stopped and
attempted to put it into gear, but it wont go, any any gear, reverse
doesn't work. The fluid was changed about 1000 miles ago, and the
transmission drove excellent before, no slips or delays at all. I use
the shifter a lot to down shift frequently, could it be the electrical
piece the shifter linkage connects to. The fluid is not low or over
filled and is not burnt. Vacuum line is connected as well. Any ideas?
Again it drove fine before, had no signs of eminent failure. The
reverse lights come on when in gear also.
this is pretty much what I'm feeling.

Sad this happened to such a rare car.

Take it to a shop and have them tear down the gearbox, but in the end, you will probably spend as much as a 5MT swap would cost to get it fixed.

I wish my AT would blow up so I could get a manual swap.

So Tranny is shot?

only way to fix it, is to slap another transmission in there right?

Well, it probably can be fixed, but in the end, combining parts, labor, and down time, it might be cheaper to get a manual transmission and swap it, or do another 4EAT. But, remember, your car is 12 years old, things are gonna break on it. I'd recommend doing a 5MT swap, since the 5MT has fewer parts to break than a 4EAT. Aside from the gears, you've got valves and other associated hydraulic components in a 4EAT, and if one of them goes bad, it could theoretically wreck the entire gearbox in a 4EAT. IMO, 5MT, even from a 1997-1999 LGT or Outback would be the way to go.

Just to keep your options open though, if you do choose to stay with the AT, a rebuilt or one from a junkyard is cheaper than messing with your broken one.

Much less labor to just swap one out rather than trouble shoot and diagnose.

So,

Found out it was Duty Solenoid C, the same thing which causes Torque Bind.

Transmission is Toast, but it's okay. It's win win win situation, I'd put in a new transmission which would act like new, fix Torque Bind and Get my car running again in less then a day or two.

\Now I need to find a mechanic to do the work.
