Relax...Right now GM acquired 30% of Subaru's assets. They don't own Subaru, Fuji Heavy Industries owns Subaru.
Don't listen to he say/she say...
That's the story

Just to clarify a bit. GM owns 20% of FHI, 100% of SAAB, 20% of Suzuki, 49% of Isuzu and 20% of Fiat (excluding Ferrari and Maserati).

Gm owns 20% non-voting shares of Fuji Heavy Industries. Since Subaru is only a part of FHI, then in turn GM does not own 20% of Subaru. The actual percentage of GM's ownership of Subaru is definitely lower. So no, 20% of Subaru is not owned by GM. And even if it was, it's non-voting, thus they have little to no decision making potential...and thank god for that!

I did a little reseach on FHI's and GM's website, and these are a few things I found:

1. Subaru contributes like 80% of FHI's revenue. And the impression I got is that Subaru is a wholly owned brand of FHI. So, if GM owns 20% or 30%, of FHI, it basically owns 20% or 30% of Subaru. [Like if you own 0.0001% of outstanding GM stock, you basically own that much of Chevrolet...]

2. All the board members of FHI are Japanese. Of course one or more may be GM's exec, but it doesn't appear that way. It seems to me GM has no direct voice in FHI.

3. GM also owns stock in Suzuki, Isuzu and Fiat - which they call the GM Network. It's very very different from Saab, which is now just a brand like Pontiac, Opel or Holden.

Hope this helps.

Skippy,
I don't know where you get your info from..but as far as CNN and every other news and Automobile articles are concerned, GM owns 30% in assets. Non-voting means the assets that they own, doesn't give them priveledge rights to obtain designs or copyrights, like Subaru's AWD.
Do your research, like I did!
Regardless how you put it, whatever % of Subaru is FHI, GM has a piece of it.

Ah yes, Elm thanks for that. I haven't checked the news lately, so I was off by a whole 10%. My bad!....and oh, i didn't know that they couldn't use Subaru's designs, really?
Well since you like to do research so much, look up the GM Borrego concept car and see where it got its AWDrivetrain from.
Gotta fly!

I read in Autoweek that GM is working on a small sport yuk based on the wrx, they had the name but I don't remember it. GM bought in to Sub to get AWD tech also acording to AW.

Question Is Subaru owned by GM, or is it its own company under FHI????

I was recently reading a post on another Forum page and everyone was saying that GM owns FHI which owns Subaru..... What is the Truth?

As far as I know, GM owns about 20% of FHI, who in turn owns Subaru.

Lightbulb

This is from Road & Track's WRX guide in an interview with Thomas Doll, SOA's CFO.
"There's a team working on product development, procurement, financial services, and these kinds of areas where we can utilize the power GM has and the power Subaru has in terms of things like AWD technology or CVT engineering. In fact, it's been announced that FHI will be the center of AWD technology and CVT technology for the GM group."

There will also be a large SUW co-developed by Subaru and GM (later than the STX). The GM will have a V6 and the Subaru will have an H6.
Dennis
edit: Better yet, just read FHI's 5 year plan that was announced May 2000.
