Default Is Refugio State Beach worth camping at?

I'm trying to find an available campsite for the weekend between LA and San Luis Obispo. Is Refugio worth the drive to camp for two days?

The plan is to relax, soak in the sun, and BBQ. Simple as that.

THX

I spent a weekend at Refugio a long time ago. As I remember, it was ok, not much by way of facilities, nearest store was a bit far. Too bad Pismo is booked solid. What about down by San Onofre, is there camping available there? Morro Bay state park has camping, may be booked also. There is a neat place south of Morro Bay, Montana d'Oro State park, limited camping and facilities, but really gorgeous location, worth it if you can get in.

I checked those places as well. I used to live in SLO and mtn biked the Montano de Oro park frequently. Orange County beaches seem to be booked up, too. I should have reserved a campsite when everyone else did 3 months ago. Refugio seemed to have the last available campsite. thanks for the tips.

It'll work out just fine with a cold beer in each hand.

Refugio is pretty cool. As mentioned the facilities are kinda whatever...I believe there is a little camp store there...if not, there is one at El Capitan which is like 5min. down the road. Its a chill spot though....its got a cool little bay right there...no real waves though.

El capitian is the best campsite in that area.

Default My review of Refugio State Beach

Just returned from Refugio. It was alright.

It is somewhat small so there aren't too many people if that's what you're looking for. The beach is beautiful and it's a good spot to cayak. The downside to that is no waves large enough for any type of surfing. There is also some sort of oil seepage that washes up on the beach and will stick to your feet. Not cool.

Overall a good time, but I'm not sure I would camp there again if there is anything available at a different beach.
