Unhappy My buddys Lotus Elise Caught fire on the freeway!

So we have been getting his car ready for the up coming AKA rally race. He just had a New larger fuel talk installed by (*******) in Corona CA. Im keeping the shops name out of it for now because we dont know if it was them or the fuel tank that failed. But he got it back a few days ago from them, drove it 4 miles home and we stared the Installation of the new sequential shifter. The install went good and was pretty simple.

So as we were testing the new Shifter on the freeway........ everything was awsome and the car ran perfect and fast as hell! So as we are going down the freeway at xxx MPH LOL. A small pop (not from the exhaust or intake) was herd and the engine shuts off. From there our conversation went like this.

Friend: Dude! it died??
Me: WTF?
silence............
Me: F***k!!! Kill the power, it smells like fuel bad dude!!! Thats why it shut off man we must have lost fuel pressure?
Friend: God damn it! S**T.............. S**t!!!
Me: just pull over and we'll check it out
Friend: Yeah........... F***K!
Then we hear a muffled "poof!"
Friend: Holy S**t its on F***ing fire!
Me: Oh F*!! Pull the Extinguisher, NOW!! Holy S**T!!!

So we pull off to the right really quick, and as we are slowing the flames were over our head and coming into the cabin (we had the top off). I jump out of the car even though were not even fully stopped, I didnt even open the door since there was no top. so I jumped out and walk in front of the car. But my buddy is still inside? So I run back and he cant find the pin in the bottle to set the Car's Extinguisher system off. So as im about to grab it he finds it and pulls the emergency handle on the dash and he jumps out. The system works as it should, and the fire dies down for about 10 seconds.......... and then lights right back up because the fuel was pouring out the bottom of the car and the nozzles for the extinguisher were neer the top of the motor. So we walk about 60 feet away and I was already on the phone with 911 at this time.
As were waiting a Highway Patrol officer pulls up and trys to put it out since it exploded and caught the hill on fire but right as he got the hill out it explodes again and he has nothing left. A few minutes later the Fire department shows up and puts it all out. There was no chance for the car after the first 2 minutes. Needless to say it was really hard to watch it go and nothing we could do about it, we did everything we could. And Hard to watch my friend who loved that car and put so much into it just watch die.

The other sad part was as it was burning, when the fire was in the interior portion the horn went off for about a minute straight till the air bags blew which exploded the windshield out and part of the driver door off and into the lanes of the 215 Freeway. It was as if the car was saying its last good bye the only way it could .

Anyways heres some pics. He just got back from the tow yard it went to and up loaded them to photobucket. And the others are from my Cell last nite.

The supercharger is a melted mess.

And no 5subaru was no where neer us!

All we know is something went wrong with he new Fuel tank, could have been the shop who installed it or the tank it self? Im guessing the insurance will have to have someone determine that.

What insurance?

They're going to look at a dealer and go 'is that a stock fuel tank'?

"No."

Then to the owner "Were any modifications done that could have caused this to happen?"

"Yes."

"Denied!" *stamp*

IMHO, this one is gonna suck & hurt. The owner did something to the car beyond what it was supposed to do. Ergo, it comes down to personal responsibility. Now, if the shop has insurance, maybe that is the insurance that the owner needs to tap... but they have to prove it was a faulty installation.

Yeah... good luck with this one. Race cars are hardly ever covered my insurance when something happens.

No, it was expensive and expensive to install. He got it for the rally so he wouldnt have to stop so many times and go much further than before.

that's exactly what I was thinking, unless he's got some sort of rider on his insurance for the upgrades...

Yeah.........the numbers were from the 2007 cross country rally which is a fund raiser for children with cancer. The roll bar is factory and unseen because its inside the fiberglass.
