So I turned the boost up towards 18psi this morning and went for a quick jaunt near some school zones to see if everything was kosher and check for more smoke and oil leaks.
Previously, @ 12-13 psi, no noise when the set boost was hit. But now? Seriously, it sounds ALOT like an EWG! I let off the pedal at first cause I thought something broke. But then I did it a few more times and bingo, evertime I hit targeted boost, the internal wastegate was LOUD. gt30 turbo.

Pretty sure, as it only happens once targeted boost happens. But I havent looked under the hood since I got back to the shop.

Internal WG...GT30? What turbo is this? Just curious, since this also impacts your other thread about smoking on throttle lift.

While it may not be a true gt30, when I purchased it I measure the both wheels inner and outer spec and compared them to the garrett side and thats what it match 100%. It has a "Precision" exhaust housing.

[edit] You just answered my question in the other thread - it's a journal bearing CHRA. Knowing that, disregard my comments on the oiling problems since they don't apply.

Yeah, when I had my motor rebuilt I set the boost to 10PSI during run in. After a weekend of driving, it developed a noise just as you describe. On boost, loud wastegate noise. I new this because I adjusted the boost to a higher threshold and the noise come on later i.e more boost, and was more faint. Now that motor is run in, boost is set to 16psi and no more noise. Haven't bothered investigating as am waiting on a new turbo anyways. Perhaps running it at 10PSI overworked the wg??

I ran it tonight @ the track and "compensated" for the boost drop by turning up the boost......
Then last run it didnt leak and boost jumped to 30+ psi and and an intercooler hose blew off. So I called it a night. I am pressure test sections of it and have found quite a few pinhole leaks, nothing major. But I did find one LARGE leak which I thought I fixed before I went out. A section of straight pipe connecting to another section is leaking. Weird. Fix it tommorrow. |
