Default Engine Identification..

So I inherited a project. I could use a little help identifying what it is exactly, and what the potential is of this engine..

Cast in the top front
EJ20

Stamped in the top rear
189224 and 961579

It is definately not the same as my 02 WRX motor, the intake manifold is different (the mounting bolts are all lined up instead of offset) and there are no TGV's. The injectors are side feed, and there is a lot of other different stuff.

I have some pictures, but my camera card reader wont play nice.. I dont have a huge knowledge of subaru engines, just picked it up as it did not cost a whole lot.

Thanks!

Howdy Chris.. now what would you want that manifold for huh?

I have no plans right away, but the wagon is not doing so well.. so we shall see.. I tried a compression test on the engine and it didnt look great, but I might be doing it wrong! I will try again this weekend.

Hey, if you are not busy saturday afternoon/evening.. a few of the subaru (and non subaru) guys are taking the back roads from columbia up to Moberly then grabbing some food at my place.. you are more than welcome to tag along.. 430 plaza tire is the spot to meet.

I would like to but I have busy day tinting on Sat.

Oh... ya know, maybe for a new motor...

Let me know how it turns out. If I get time, I wouldn't mind helping with what I could...

would a newer engine say EJ207 where this one says EJ20? are there other places where you can ID the engine besides that? perhaps the numbers in the rear of the engine near flywheel?

there should have been a sticker, numbers, that would help identify.
so do have the plastic timing covers?
