I am also having trouble programming my '06 WRX. It should be the same system as yours.
The manual is not written accurately. For example it says "If an error occurs six times" when they should have written "If a beep occurs six times." I also am wearing out the lock-unlock button trying to find the combination. If there is someone who works for Subaru and can write key fob programming instructions in good English please post! |

I think the problem with the OP is that he might be in valet mode. If you have another remote, with the drivers side door open, press and hold unlock on the remote until the light on the dash stops flashing. If you don't have a remote, disconnect the battery for a minute to reset the alarm system. If the alarm starts going off, turn the key in the ignition 3 times fast to turn the alarm off.
If you have a somewhat round remote, with 2 small buttons, sometimes blue and orange, sometimes both grey, this is how you program your remote 1. Get in vehicle and cycle key to the "ON" position 10 times withing 15 seconds, meaning pretty quickly. You will hear a beep or the horn will sound. (NOTE: Sometimes you have to turn it 11 times) 2. Open and close the drivers side door. 3. Press one of the buttons on the remote 4. Open and close the drivers side door. 5. **If you have other remotes, repeat steps 3 and 4 for all other remotes 6. Remove key from ignition, you should hear a beep/honk that the reprogramming has ended 7. Test remote(s) I believe the 06 remotes are teardrop in shape and I am not exactly sure how to program them, but I know it requires getting the number for the remote (found inside the remote) and programming it with the door lock switch. Or you could take it to the dealer and they can program it within a minute with the computer. |

1. Get in the car and shut the door 2. Turn the key to the ON position 10 times within 15 seconds, you should hear a beep (again, you will not hear this beep if the alarm is in valet mode) 3. Open and close the drivers side door. The alarm will start sounding and will go off for approx 30 seconds. 4. BEFORE the alarm stops sounding, press the lock button the same number of times as the first digit of the number for the remote (For example, if the number of the remote is 64521256, press the lock button 6 times.) 5. Then press unlock on the door lock switch (this tells the system you are entering the next number) 6. Repeat step 4 for the second digit. 7. Press unlock on the door switch 8. Continue doing steps 4 and 5 until all 8 numbers are done. 9. After you have entered the last digit, the alarm will sound again for approx 30 seconds. 10. Enter the entire number again, following the steps above, starting with step # 4 11. As long as the second code entered is the same as the first one, the doors will lock and unlock by themselves. 12. ** If you have additional remotes, repeat steps 4 thru 10 13. When finished programming all remotes, remove key from ignition and test remotes. Again, if this gets you too frustrated, take the remote to a dealer. |

RexyGirl thanks for the great detail!
At step 9, I always get a 2 second beep instead of 30 seconds. I re-enter the entire sequence and never get the automatic door lock/unlock. I can do this in my sleep now, but may have to go to a dealer. |

'. . .cycle key to the "ON" position 10 times withing 15 seconds, meaning pretty quickly.' A better technique is to just keep cycling the key from "Lock" to "On" until you hear the beep, it may take you a while to fine the rhythm so that you can make 10 "round trips" in 15 seconds. The '06 "teardrop" remotes can be programmed in this way as well (and in fact can be used on '05 Subies as well). At some point the programming technique changed to the "punch the remote number in with the door lock button", but it wasn't '05 |

Update - the 1st remote was "bad" and was replaced by the dealer under warranty.
As for the 2nd remote, to my shock and amazement, the technician walked up to the car and remote worked without him doing anything! All this time I was following the instructions in the book over and over. It said the doors would automatically lock and unlock when you successfully programmed it. The doors never did that and so I though it didn't work. Therefore I never actually tried the remote! |

I agree, the newer 'teardrop' remotes are alot harder to program, but the older ones I can do before the customer can blink twice. |

letters in '06 fob code
I'd like to reprogram a fob for my '06 subaru forester. I had asked a dealer about getting it done and was told it would cost $75 (!).
I opened up the fob to get the code and I have an 8 digit combination of numbers with 3 letters mixed in. Does anyone know what to do with the letters? Is it a hex code equivalent (I only have A's and B's)? thanks! |

This is great. Thanks. Just went to the dealer and was quoted about $75 for the FOB and another $98 for the programming. Is this the going rate? I would like to get the fob and try the manual method beautifully detailed by RexyGirl. I presume the method is the same for my 01 Legacy?
Any other places to pick up a FOB for a little less? |

Your programming is a little different, but actually easier. The remote should come with instructions. |

Will do. And I did see the other site about programming various models.
http://www.cars101.com/subaru/keyless.html Seems like the Alpine system is a piece of cake. How can they quote me a price of $98 for that? |

ok...this is the thread i wanted...here it goes again...
...uh..i know this is old, buy my subie IS an 05, my fob IS teardrop, and I cant get that dang horn to honk after ten times. Then I dont know if this matters but the extra fob I got has the recessed unlock button, where my original 05 does not, does that matter? Anyways, I just called the local dealership here and they want 104.00 just to program. I asked twice to make sure it was "JUST TO PROGRAM" . " Stealership" is right. |

I have an 02 wrx..
But have the teardrop remote that I would like to program to this car. Is the method still the same to program with the hitting the lock button? Last edited by Rexarew; 11-15-2009 at 09:25 PM. |

That remote will not work for your vehicle. You need the remote with either 2 grey buttons or an orange and a blue.

If you have a somewhat round remote, with 2 small buttons, sometimes blue and orange, sometimes both grey, this is how you program your remote
(To be 100% sure you're ready just disconnect your negative battery lead and fill your washer fluid while you wait 1min before reconnecting the battery. I also turned my headlights/fans off plus had my foot on the brake pedal the whole time I did this to make it as easy as possible.) 1. Get in vehicle and cycle key to the "ON" position 10 times withing 15 seconds, meaning pretty quickly. You will hear a beep or the horn will sound. (NOTE: Sometimes you have to turn it 11 times) (I just rocked it between the ON position and the first back position that makes the dash lights turn off. I did it ton of times really fast until the horn honked.) 2. Test remote(s) I just thought I would add that this worked for my 03 Baja. It took about 2 minutes total to program 2 used Subaru orange/blue button remotes (from an 05 Baja) that I bought online. I was very happy with the info in this thread! |

Hmm good reminder that I need to sell some spare remote units still.. Last time I tried people were total clowns wanting to pay less than the shipping price for them and they are barely used, one was brand new. It's like nobody has ever asked a dealer 'how much'?

Hi guys, I got a replacement fob for my 2006 Impreza. It has the same FCC ID as my current one, only there is an open trunk button and a panic button on the replacement. I have succeeded in programming the car for the new remote (using the excellent instructions in this thread). In fact I did it four times, I know this because after each time I'd try the new remote and it wouldn't work so I'd retry figuring I made a mistake somewhere. After the fourth time, my default remote was removed from the remote codes programmed in and it didn't work anymore. I was able to reprogram the car to accept that remote. So I am sure I am programming the remotes correctly.
This leads me to the conclusion that either (1) The replacement fob I got off eBay for $12.50 with shipping is no good. OR (2) The replacement fob will not work with my car even though it has the same FCC ID, because there are extra buttons on the replacement remote that do not exist on my standard remote. Does anyone know which is the case? |

Ebay remotes have been known to be no good. I have tried myself to program ones customers have brought in and they don't work....only to program a Subaru one and have no problem. If it is a 'new' OEM replacement, send it back. You have a better chance of a 'used' one working than an OEM 'replacement' |
