Thumbs down 2nd Clutch in 4000Km!

Yup that's right, This morning I brought my car back to the dealer to have my clutch checked out (The same clutch they installed as a warranty replacement for the original). Well turns out another new clutch is in my future after only 4000Km on the clutch!
Damnit! I am sick of this crap with faulty clutches.
I would like to just say, shag it and put an aftermarket clutch in there, but while it's still under warranty and parts are expensive I can't really do it.
Anyway, just had to rant

Chad

How about asking them to install an aftermarket clutch and don't charge you the install?

That may be a good solution...

Matt (patiently waiting for STi clutch/flywheel...)

Question

What happen to your clutch?

I have some problems with my clutch too. But it only happens at cold start which never happens once I am at the dealer.

Matt,
That may be an option. They haven't called yet to tell me what's going on, but When I'm talking to them, I'll bring it up.

Andy,
Well the first clutch was great at first (bought the car used). After about 20,000Km of driving (total of 50,000KM on car) the clutch peddle got very "light" feeling and inconsistant action. I coudn't tell when the clutch was going to start grabbing. It progressivly got worse. One local dealer refused to replace it under warranty, went to another, got it replaced under warranty. Now after 4000Km it's all starting over again, but happening much quicker than before.

I tried it last night and it was pure evil! Yuck. Glad that you could
get it replaced under warranty.

Default Oh man!!

You wouldn't believe the hassle/arguments I had to go through to get them to agree to a clutch replacement!
This morning they said they would replace the clutch. Ok I was cool with that.
4:00pm they called me and told me it was fixed. I get there, they tell me that the clutch was fine but they "adjusted" the Master Cylinder push rod. What a crock! There is NO adjustment on the master cylinder pushrod
I then asked the parts man to check and see if the 2002 rs has the same clutch assembly as the 2000RS. All part numbers matched. Same clutch. So I told them I was going to go talk to the sales man and take a 2002 for a drive. Interestingly, one of the parts guys had just finnished speaking to the salesman, who proceeded to tell me they did not have any cars available for a test drive, and that the ones outside with a 5MT were all sold. BS!!! Anyway to make a long story even longer, The shop master tech took the car for a drive and after exchaning arguments he called the warranty representative at SOC and they finally agreed to order and replace my flywheel and clutch assembly.
I left out many details beacause I am already sick of repeating the same story I've told to many people (and will make sure other will be told!!!).
I spend 1 hour and 15 minutes more than I wanted to the dealer this afternoon.
I will end my rant now.

Goobie,

Iím sorry to hear about your ongoing clutch problems.
Iím having no problems with my ACT ĎStreetí clutch Ė Iíve clocked over 30K kms on it so far. It behaves just like the stock clutch except it doesnít shudder, but it is stiffer (rated to handle ~320 ft-lbs torque) and stinks a little when you let it slip on hard acceleration.

Apparently the ACT clutch is identical to the stock setup except for the pressure plate (made by Exedy). If shudder is all you need to address; apparently only the pressure plate needs to be changed. There is no need to replace the clutch face (or the flywheel).

IIRC someone in the US has had his or her clutch replaced with the ACT under dealer warranty.
Perhaps Lachute Subaru would do that for you.

Ed.

Ed,
I have thought about calling lachute, I think now I acutally will.
They are without a doubt the best customer oriented dealer I have ever dealt with!
I'll give them a call
Thanks for the input.

Sent you a PM.
I'd rather not post it here (as much as I'd like to).
I've heard of dealers taking people to court for slander and to tell you the truth after doing business with them I wouldn't put it past them!

Why do dealers do this? Does doing warranty work or fixing customer problems really cost them that much?

Do they not want repeat business? I'm scared if i need warranty work from all the stories i read on here.

Are the local dealers decent with routine maintanence?

Exclamation

Always ask for a written estimate
if the work is not covered in the warranty...
