Before the turbo spools?

Pathetic. ;-)

No power at all under 2000rpms, low from 2000-2500, decent from 2500-3000, and then *woosh* ;-)

But don't let it drop below 2000 rpms, or you'll bog.

It's Blue, ok?

power below when the turbo spools is just good for getting the clutch engaged, and for the parking lot manuvering.

If you keep the rev's around 2500-3000 you will keep the turbo spooled for the most part.

that's a scary thought...low compression, small displacement motor

It can't be 165 - that's the rating on the EJ25. Probably more like 130-140. I actually like having a more sedate motor at low RPM. It makes stop-and-go traffic much easier to navigate.

no no, I am sure it's much lower than that.

the RS uses a EJ25 with decently high compression..

the WRX is on the EJ20 with low compression..

so pre-spool up it's making LAME horsepower..

I'd venture to say in the realm of 100 or so..

If it could rev to 6000 without boost a low compression 2.0L might make 100-110 HP. But you're talking about 1500-3000 RPM. At that low RPM--off boost--it probably only makes 40-50 HP.

Edit: looking at Cobb's stock RS dyno chart, the high compression 2.5 is making just under 50 wheel HP at 3000 RPM. That's maybe 60-65 HP at the crank, so 40 or so sounds about right for the 2.0.

The WRX is at least as much slower than the RS below 3k as is faster above 3k. So yes, .5l less displacement and less compression make for slow going if you dont spool quickly.

EJ20 without tubro would be around 100-115 MAX, no way it can reach 140-150 range.

I agree 100 hp or so max. You could always put higher compression pistons in it. But the cam is probably milder than a high compression engines cam...

Who cares? What a worthless point..."if you take away the turbo, what's left?"...

Hypothetically, you don't have much...but

Who cares??? Have you experienced the boost yet?

I agree with SubEd. Who cares. It has a turbo. So use that darn glorified hairdryer!!
On a serious note, off boost with a 2.0l small compression motor, it's really slow. And it's on a car weighing 3085lb dry weight too!
Sure makes one wonder how does the ppl in other countries putt putt around with their 1.8l new age Impreza which weighs so heavy.

Here's an idea - go and research Subaru's other engines. They make the EJ20 in non-turbo format with a slightly higher compression ratio. It makes 125 bhp at 5600 rpm, which you would expect given that the 2.5 makes 160 or so (166 in NA, 156 elsewhere).

Of course, the turbomotor would have lower compression, so if you took it away it would make less. But this a purely academic point, akin to asking "how fast does a V8 go if you tried unplugging 4 HT leads to save on gas?"
