(1) Meeting point - SKOKIE, IL OLD ORCHARD SHOPPING MALL @ Barnes & Noble http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie...09152&t=h&z=17 - it is close to I-94 unlike Schaumburg and besides I am da' Boss and I say so. - from Schaumburg, you guys should take Golf Rd. heading EAST - Kamil & Cris please take care of the drivers' meting explaining the rules & regulations and what is expected of each driver on this trip. - Dave, Archie, Kamil, Cris and myself - park separately from the rest. - All others cars align in 2 columns BEHIND either Brad (Legacy GT blue) or Tom (Forester XT silver). Should there be need for more, I will reassign people and roles. - At the front end: GFXDave (recon) up ahead, then at some distance further back f1anatic...then at some further distance back Kamil. - At the tail end: Cris (Nighthawk) and Archie (discuss it amongst ourselves then and there). - Be there no later than 07:40 hours fully fueled - Drivers' Meeting & Last Hurdles 07:45 Departure (2) Manitowoc, WI - 10:30 Arrival at Wisconsin Maritime Museum - Meeting Wisconsin Crew (minimizing fumbling time) http://www.wisconsinmaritime.org/ - Visit GATO class World War II fleet submarine USS COBIA (SS-245) - Will arrange group rates and visit - 12:00 Departure (3) Sturgeon Bay, WI - 13:30 Arrival & Lunch & Refuel - 14:30 Departure - Will schedule Lunch (4) Cana Island Light House - Arrive 15:00 Lighthouse directory http://www.terrypepper.com/lights/lake_michigan.htm http://www.doorcounty.com/images/map...lighthouse.gif We will visit (or at least admire) the CANA ISLAND Light House (Baileys Harbour) (obviously we are not going on the island) http://www.terrypepper.com/lights/mi...canaisland.htm - Depart 15:30 (5) Northport WI @ the tip of Door County Peninsula - Arrive 16:15 More details here: http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showp...2&postcount=38 - Drive the road, set up cameras, take pictures - Depart 17:00 (6) Peninsula State Park / Ellison Bay - Door County - Arrive 17:30 - Admire sunset, snow flakes, etc - To appease Kamil, if we make it here, I will let him lead the way. Offroading. We shall take the first unknown road that leads into the forest. If we have to reverse 3 miles, all 20 of us in the convoy...so be it. I do not assume any responsibility. We all followed Kamil. More pictures here but I know you guys do not like this and get easily bored by splendid fall foliage: http://www.pbase.com/dbalwani/fallcolors&page=all (7) Corn Maze - Arrival 18:30 (ok here we can choose to stay ONLY at the cornfield or we go to the haunted house as well. There is something about the way Google Maps calculates times and distances: they claim 35 miles in 56 minutes. I mean c'mon...who does that ? Is it really that big of a traffic jam there ?) http://www.dairyview.com/maze.htm (Dress appropriately for the weather with sun protection or rain gear. Wear substantial footwear, like athletic shoes or hiking boots. You can expect to be in the maze for approximately 2 hours of engaging fun.Within the maze there are three optional games... based on finding specific locations shown on the maze map. Uniquely shaped paper punches await the players at each of the destination points. Players are expected to find all of the stations and punch their cards as proof of completing the maze games. Some players even compete against the clock. special fall Halloween Haunted Corn Maze, Oct. 11, 18 and 26 from dusk 'til 9 PM. ) Address 5169 County I Road, Sturgeon Bay, Wi (8) Jaycees' Annual Haunted House http://sturgeonbayjaycees.com/index....&dt=1224362393 http://www.doorcounty.com/features/default.aspx?ID=15 - will have to confirm it is open. Their website claims YES, Door County Travel Guide says NO. Address John Miles County Park (Fairgrounds) 812 N 14th Ave Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 (9) Sturgeon Bay - This is where we shall spend the night and get our late dinner and do the drinking part - since we would be done driving for the day. - I am thinking some partying on the beach, you know bonfire, barbecue, or at least a moonlight walk on the beach Ok. That statement freaked me out as well. How about just some Poker ? - I am sure they got some camping grounds for those of us who want to rough it, as well as a decent (and reasonably priced) roof above the head. Sturgeon Bay seems to be a resort town. I will expand this section with choices for both situations. I mean...we will be in late October. We may go there and have a gorgeous day...and we may wake up to snow or freezing rain: both further north (and west) and the lake effect. WHERE TO STAY OVERNIGHT @ STURGEON BAY (FINAL DECISION) CAMPING - those camping will stay here http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/...ic/Potawatomi/ Daisy Field Campground http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/...mpground07.pdf More Info http://wisconsinstateparks.reserveam...I&parkId=60036 HOTELS/MOTELS - those in need of a solid roof The link below shows the Hotels/Motels available in the area. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie...86861&t=h&z=14 SUPER 8 Motel I called them and the rates should be 65 dollars for a room with 2 beds. Unless you all have a phobia of a male room mate, I suggest you guys share a room unless - of course - you are coming with the lady. It is just 1 night so whether you are used to sleeping at Hilton or Radisson I am quite confident you will survive the night. Likewise, it is not as expensive to break your budget, espec. if you can afford to come on the drive. As a matter of fact it was USD 65.00 and 6.18 in Taxes to a room cost of 71.18 dollars for the night. I suggest you make your reservations sooner rather than later. http://www.super8.com/Super8/control...9&brandInfo=SE Super 8 Sturgeon Bay Hwy 42/57 at Sturgeon Bay Exit 409 Green Bay Road Sturgeon Bay, WI, 54235-2839 US Maps & Directions .phoneWebNsTitle { width:4em; } Phone: 920-743-9211 Fax: 920-743-4143 E-Mail: [email protected] I hate making group decisions but I guess you left me no choice. You are of course welcome to make other reservations. To that end, I added the link just above... Smack in the middle of the map there is an intersection - that intersection is the closest to the campgrounds. DINNER TIME IN STURGEON BAY: We'll figure out but they got Culver's ; Applebee's etc. Sunday 26th October - I wanna be home early in the day. 230 miles. 4 hours flat out. Not sure I wanna stop anywhere else. (10) Chicago Before 14:00 hrs. No ifs. Not buts. We take our toys and go home. We wake up at 7-8, we fumble up for 2 hours getting ready, getting breakfast, last few hugs, kisses, pictures...At 10:00 the latest we are on the road. Ok. Maybe I should be realistic. I will be on the road. Schedule is 90% in its final form. I am a greedy bastard and if I drive so far, I wanna get my money worth. that is why I encourage people to stay overnight. But hey, if you come along with another person and there are 2 drivers, sure leave early. There are already several of us confirmed overnighters. And NO we are not cuddling up. Do not get overly impressed by the distances. We covered just as much on the Summer cruise. this time we're doing something, not just driving. There will be limited twisties and hills. Emphasis is on scenic drives and events. The Directions thus far http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sadd...,1.389771&z=10 Thank you all for completing the survey. Here are the results. http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showp...8&postcount=19 Thank you all for completing the survey. Here are the results. http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showp...8&postcount=19

Total distance: 577 miles. We did something like 534 on the last one. However I spread this over 2 days.
I would like to bring your attention to the way that Google Maps calculates time: Chicago to Port Washington 118 Miles @ 2h 10m Port Washington to Manitowoc 53 @ 55m Manitowoc to Sturgeon Bay 63 miles @ 1h 42m (country roads and speed limits and such, but I do not believe this !) Regardless - this is the unfortunate distance that we have to cover before we get to the fun zone. In earnest, and based on the survey, where people were cool with driving 160 miles before getting to the fun area: the first calculated way point is Manitowoc and the US Submarine. You can't accuse me of not respecting thy wishes. From down Town Chicago Manitowoc there are 170 miles. But we would be departing from the northern suburbs so it will be 155-160 miles only. So ha ha ha right on the money. The 230 or so miles from Chicago to Sturgeon bay is indeed the killer. When you see the 577 miles distance, keep in mind that you are doing 230 of them on day 2 (for those of us who chose to stay overnight in sturgeon Bay). You don't have to...and to make it back home, you should leave either before the corn maze / haunted house or right after and you should be home by...11ish. On the other hand, I have never been to door county so I am trying to get my money worth and experience as much as possible. By any means, please do not complain about the distance. Simply do not come and do not post in here - go to Starved Rock instead on your own time. I bet it is beautiful there as well. Last edited by f1anatic; 09-19-2008 at 12:53 AM. |

Completed the survey. Had a BLAST on the last drive (Minus having to leave early due to my passenger. Won't make that mistake again.)
