I bought the car a couple of weeks ago car came from Vermont 1997 Impreza awd 5-speed 130K new trans. 6 months ago there is a stack of reciepts of parts replaced Only two owners which were both ladies. I paid $1600 for it what do you think?
Just like the title says ive been dealing with this code from hell. I have tried to get it registered and all but fails deq emissions. Everything is ready except evap. it says "NOT READY" the car does have some rust here and there. I replaced gas cap cycled it and CEL comes back smoke tested it and no leaks i replaced purge control solenoid and CEL still comes back. Everytime i clear CEL i drive it for about 2-3 days and it will pop up on the HWY. It only comes when it gets below half tank. my tags are now 3 weeks expired and school is around the corner what else should i do??? change filler neck? any other solenoids to check? please help thanks ![]()

Yeah, it could be the filler neck. Look at it with a flashlight through the opening. If you see any rust at all, you have a winner (loser). Why this didn't surface in a smoke test I don't know. I never smoke tested the Forester when the code popped up, because I saw the rust and just knew. I replaced the gas cap first just to be sure though.
The plastic cover in the wheel well traps moisture and various cruds, rusting the crap out of your filler neck. |

Whoooa i just finished replacing the filler neck and other corroded tubes around the vapor canister. The filler neck was rusted out! Im going to delete the code and see if it comes back! When you changed the filler neck and gas cap did the code go away?

The code has to be reset. One way you can do this on your own is to disconnect the battery for a few minutes. If the light comes back, you have another problem.

is reseting the code that way, the same way as getting a diagnostic scanner and erasing the code?

You need to get the code pulled again and post back what it is.

P0440 Evaporative Emission system Malfunction
when the CEL turned on for the very first time, which was about a month ago there were two more codes which were P0500 - Vehicle speed sensor malfunction P1540 Manufacturer Specific Code WHen i took it to a suabru mechanic the first time he just erased them all and the only one that comes back is P0440. The only solenoid i have changed is the purge control solenoid.. which other ones should i also look at? |

OH and one more thing the very first time i took it to DEQ the Evaporative was "ready", but it failed because it had 3 codes. The last couple of times i took it to the DEQ it read evaportative "Unready" but there were no codes

I just checked two other solenoids. I connected the blue plugs under the steering column to see if the solenoids were operating and the canister valve ventilator next to the vapor canister box was NOT operating, it wasnt making any noise, is that normal? I also checked the solenoid for canister purge. I was able to blow air right through the two vacume lines is this solenoid suppose to be closed when out of the car, just like the purge control solenoid?

I am bumping this for answers.
I just bought a beater 99 Legacy wagon and it has the P0420/P0440 codes. I am not worried about the 420, I can fix that one, but I have no idea what the 440 is. I think in 15 years dealing with cars I have never ran into that one before. I'll be pulling the motor for a reseal/tune up this weekend. I'll check the gas filler tube, but I haven't noticed any fuel smells. When the tube rotted out on my 98 wagon I smelled fuel. |
