Well I finally got the motor together, turned it over by hand and everything seems fine. So installed the engine filled up all the fluids and it finally started it up to see what would happen. It's running like a champ now....wahoo

Default I am considering using a phase I block.

I have a 99 forester with a blown motor (Phase II). I also have a wrecked 98 legacy GT (Phase I) with a good motor. Is it possible to take to the Phase I block and use the forester (phase II) top end and other parts to get my forester going again? I was wondering what head gasket I should use. It seems that this is possible by reading the above posts. Is there anything else I should look out for?

Phase 1 heads flow better then the SOHC Phase 2's. Match the head gaskets to the block your using.

Absolutely. The thing to watch out for is the pistons come out of the deck slightly at TDC on the phase I block. Use headgaskets for the DOHC motor (correct thickness) and all will be well.
