The tuning philosphy behind time attack cars running stretched is that you get a lot less sidewall flex. Turn in will be much sharper compared to a "meaty" setup, albeit at the expense of outright grip.

When you turn a car basically turn the wheel, then body roll happens. It's only after the car's suspension takes a set that you actually feel the whole car begin to turn. So we put in stiffer suspension and roll bars to minimize that roll, and the car turns better.

The same applies somewhat to tires as well. The wheel changes angle, the sidewall flexes and only after the sidewall takes a set does the contact patch begin to really point in the direction you want it to. By running stretched, the sidewall is at maximum tension all the time, so it's that little bit quicker on turn-in.

Meaty: From | | to / / then you turn.
Stretched: From \ / to \ / immediate turn-in

Of course if there's too little grip to begin with, all of that responsiveness will be for naught. So the Japanese T/A cars run both wide (in terms of rubber) and stretched (in terms of fitment).

If I recall correctly, azenis do not run small but they do have a sidewall which naturally slants in.

Im running 18x10 +35 and 265/35 on my 07 STI (and theres still more space). If I had an 08/09 I would go 285/35.
