Unhappy paint

man this hasn't been my week lately with the car so many things happened.

first some car that wasnt AWD was slipping and so he floored it and a rock flew and chipped my bumper.

then while i was turning into my street a truck that spreads dirt and sand shot a few pebbles at my car when i passed by i swerved all the way to the right and drove on the sidewalk to avoid it but it still hit me and now i have 2 chips right next to the intercooler..damn.

and today a ******* crow stood on my car and it even **** on it when it flew away!! ****! the crow left some scratches on the ******* hood. i even tried wax and scratch remover, worked a little but the scratches are still visible.

i also went to subaru today. i ordered some rally blue touch up paint. hopefully i can get it to look a little better. any one have experience and tips for using touch up paint?

i am also thinking about getting the full front end cover too. i checked to see if they had mud guards specifically for the WRX but they only had them for the back and not the front. winslow how much are your mudflaps for just the front?

is it me or is subaru paint really cheap? a simple pebble takes off the paint! are there any other things i can do to protect the paint?

Yes Subaru paint is cheap.

Don't get a front end bra though. They end up trapping sand and other small debris underneath them. Then when they shift around a little bit from wind it acts just like sand paper against the finish.

Oh, one thing that is good is the stoneguard stuff. It's a clear material almost like tape that you put on the front end and any other area's that can get chipped.

It's better to use it before you get any chips though because it won't fill in the chips so they'll look like air bubbles. So if you go this route, make sure you get the chips filled in first.

Default fill in chips

Hey Eby do you know where to get chips filled in or are you just referring to a home job? I have no confindence in my painting skills and wouldn't mind a little bit of knowledgable assistance in the use of touch up paint.

Thanks

Bill

The clear stuff is made by a company called xpel and I am about to have it put on my car. It is suppose to be guarenteed against chipping with a one inch rock traveling at 120 mph. I am going to check it out. It has a four year warrentee against yellowing fading or chipping, so we shall see. I am having it put on in about another week or two for anyone who is interested.

Good luck with the touch up paint, when I tried to use it on my Rally Blue Pearl RS, it did not match that well. But it makes it quite a bit less noticeable.

The xpel type products are a good idea, but I am curiious to see how Daves turns out. I will be putting Stongard on all of my lights in the very near future.

I haven't looked into it lately, but I know they sell pre cut kits for like 100-150 or so(IIRC). You can buy the material in rolls from 3M and cut it yourself to be much cheaper.

Chips, don't know anyone who fills them in, I'm bet any paint shop could do it though. I'm just thinking DIY job. I'd always use a really small paint brush. If it's down to bare metal you're going to want to treat it with some anti rust stuff, and put some primer on it first. Then just dab the paint in the chip until it fills it up. Should turn out better if you use a couple small coats.

I think we have three or four of those clear kits. I have a full kit from Stoneguard, and some smaller kits from another manufacturer. I've been contemplating if I should install them or sell them. If you want to see them ask Kris. All the clear paint protection companies use 3M. The difference is in the thickness.

AutoXr has the clear paint protection on his car. Did you see it at the meet?

I forgot to add that the set of four mudflaps run about $50 with hardware. So, for the front set - $25. I think Kris still has a set.

Cool

The Subaru paint $uck$, I found out the day after I took delivery.

Something that's appropriate here:

Jay Leno was talking about his multi-million dollar car colletcion on SppedVision when the interviewer asked him how he could stand to drive such valuable cars. His reply was that cars were meant to drive and have fun with. His philosophy was to take a 100 point car and drive it down to zero, then restore it back to 100 points. So, don't get too bummed out, it's nearly always repairable and shows that it's a daily driver and not a garage queen.

I do have a set or two of mud flaps available. Let me know if you are interested in them and we can probably work something out.

I will definately be doing the Stongard on the lights for sure, and am going to look into the other pieces a little more.

Question

did you have to drill any holes for the mudflaps you guys have on?
i noticed how winslow's car still looked clean after driving out to take pictures at our last meet. was it the mudflaps that helped keep it clean? and do they help prevent the paint chips from rocks thrown from the tires? hopefully they will cause they look pretty big.

Drilling is optional. I drilled both the front and rears. Its more secure but not needed. I'd say it does help keep the road debris off the car and help keep it clean longer. Why only the fronts? I'll probably take mine off when move to SoCal this July.

They still kick up dirt and make your car dirty. Plus, the people behind you will be grateful.

If you put these on the front, then you will want them on the rear too. I do not think it will look right to only have them on the front or the back. Plus, Winslow is right, but them on the back so that you do not throw rocks at other people.

I will have to check and see how many mud flaps I have left, but I saw some more at Napa when I was there a day or so ago. I know that Ripvan also wants some, so we will have to have a mudflap party.

If you do go out and but some flaps, then ask Kris for the template. It'll make installation easier or you can make it yourself.
