Well, at least in my case I didn't pay for a new filter. I purchased the car new, either the factory didn't install a filter on the production line, or someone took it out. The only one working on that car besides me was my local dealer, not the one I purchased the car from however. I got the car for at least $1000 less (I forget at this point) from a dealer about 35 miles from my home. The neighbor dealer is about 3 miles from my home.

I did a check on the "aircabinman", both for a $10.03 and a more expensive Subaru filter. The site reported neither will fit my 2004 Forester. I may just upgrade my home-made filter with a good quality furnace filter. I should be able to make at least 4 to 6 filters out of one furnace filter.

Thanks for the link to Amazon, they had been one of my favorite sources, but they screwed up royally on an order recently, more correctly screwed up three time, same mistake each time.

Anyway, the Amazon site was good enough to check on a fit: 2004 Forester X and, what?, is doesn't fit. It looks about right to my eye Could it be Subaru did something different on my Forester to make it unlike other models?

The dimensions I saw on some parts site are:

1.5" High
8.6" Wide
7.8"

I made a rough simple filter to measurements I made on the holder, didn't write those down, but the above numbers sound close to what I did, I'll bet I did 8.5 and 7.75.

Pleated furnace filters are typically 1" High and one could cut so that they preserver two finished sides, then figure out some way to finish the two cut sides - someone, maybe this thread said they had done just that. I think one of these would work fine and cost not much, less than $5 if the rest of the filter was thrown away. I'd make a second one, or buy a really big filter and make 4 Subaru filters. But, who keeps a car long enough to use 4 cabin air filters?

I just noticed this HUGE thread (hardly come into this section of the forums. My car has 95K I think the dealer "changed" the filter at 35K service, but I will find out as I suspect there is not one in there. I ordered 2 ATP premimum filters from rockauto. Had a 5% discount code (79531553023843) and it has a $5 mail-in rebate (http://rockauto.com/lang/en/promo.html). Also, love the fact that rockauto uses paypal which makes things so quick.

If I remember I will post some pics of the old filter.

aircabinman is an ebay vendor.

Edit: I did a search on air cabin man and didn't come up with any sites with that in the address string.

Greetings. I recently purchased an SRT Roadster with 16k miles on it from its original owner, who lives a few miles from me. He had taken excellent care of the car and the only item needing service was the cabin air filter, which was still the factory original. I have replaced many of these on several different vehicles in the past, and I can say from experience that it is typically an easy job, and the SRT proved no different.

Is the filter different for the '08 + model years for the WRX? I went to ebay to look at aircabinman and it looks like for the '08+ it comes in a plastic holder. In all of the pics posted none of the filters have that....would I be fine to order the cheaper one for 99-07 without the plastic frame?
Thanks

I'd take that into a dealer. I bet they'd make a display case for it. "Is this what your filter looks like?"

Thanks for this post and how to. Bought mine off ebay for 10$, replaced it in less than 10 minutes thanks to the info in this post. 93000 miles and never been switched, looked like my ac was trying to suck up a tree, leaves and dandelions, dust, bugs, a little bit of everything. Combined with doing a really good cleaning of my interior, seats, and carpets, my car feels and smells really fresh now.

Well- I answered my own question in case anyone else is curious... I took everything out of the glovebox and can see where the filter is located. It does have the extra plastic so it does NOT look like the older style filter will work. I found a vendor on ebay that sells them in a three pack which is cheaper per filter than aircabinman ($29 for a three pack vs $14 for one with aircabinman so its basically buy two get one free).

automotivepartssuperstore is the vendor. If you search CABIN AIR FILTER C36115 or 2009 Subaru cabin air filter you should be able to find it.

I'm glad I found this thread so I can do it myself and save the $ from having someone else do it (aka the dealer).

I'm going to change mine today, I have had a new filter for a couple months but changing it looks easier than I thought. I'll add pictures after I'm done.

Car has 104,000 kms or about 65,000 miles. Not sure if it's ever been changed before.

EDIT: So, I go to change the filter and there isn't even one in there! This explains why dust would blow through my vents whenever I drove on dry, dusty logging roads last summer. I bought the car with 86,000 kms so it's been without a cabin air filter for atleast 18,000 kms
