My filter looked pretty bad when I replaced it. Got rid of some odd smells. I picked up a Wix from Amazon. They use a technology called Bioshield 75. It kills mold spores and bacteria without the use of chemicals. You can read more about it on the Wix website. Also google it.

Looks like the filter was doing its job. 160K miles, on an '05? That's some turcking. That's about 100K more than I have on my '04 Forester, which was delivered without a filiter in the holder.

How often should these filters be changed? I'm seeing posts over 100k miles, I just bought my 2013 Impreza when should I replace the filters?

You owner manual should give you the recommendation... but in truth it "all depends". I'd not worry about changing that filer before 30,000 miles without even looking for factory recommendations. Of course, if you are driving on dirt roads a lot, then it could be best to check at 10,000 miles or so. The filter is behind the glove box in my Forster, but still not hard to get too..maybe 15 minutes total, more like 30 minutes when putting it back together is included in the work time.

With the pollen we have down here in Fla I change it at least once a year. Usually early fall.

I originally used a shop vac on mine, but just knowing that I'm breathing that crap...and how cheap the darn things are, was enough to convince me to swap it.

I get the filters for my 10' off of amazon. Theyre like $14 a pop I just got 10 of them since I actually follow the manual and change it every 14k miles.

I dont have pictures of when I did mine on an 06' 2.5i, but what I'm shocked to see here is that the WRX's didnt have them!

How could my base 2.5i have one from the factory, and the STi's have them but they skip the WRX's???? fo reals?

Replaced my cabin filter during spring cleaning. This is the original filter after almost 20k miles and 1 year. There are a couple of bugs, twigs, and leaves in there, as well as a good amount of pollen and soot, but nothing too gross. I will make this an annual maintenance item.

I tried vacuuming the old filter out with a shop vac, just to see how clean it would get. It pulled all the crumbs, bugs, and leaves out, but didn't get much of the black stuff off.

Changed mine today while my oil pan was draining. No need to post pics, it's the same as the rest of these; over 100k, full of 1/8" to 1/4" of particulate, random bits of nature, and a honey bee. This has got to help the A/C, I put it on 1 to see and it felt like it was flowing much better. I used the Subaru filter but I can see how you could just as easily get a HEPA filter and cut it to suit, might even get better results who knows.
