Default Anybody have a unichip?

As I understand it you need a unichip distributor to install and tune it to your car. I'm not aware of anyone up here who is capable of doing so, so what does everyone do concerning engine management if we can't get the popular chips out there such as the unichip?

Unichip is a generic term for the piggyback ECU. Cobb, Vishnu, and TurboXS make affordable Unichips that run about $700. APS/Cobb suggests that you have your car tuned by them but it isn't necessary. The TurboXS is PnP and the Vishnu requires some splicing. Both are relatively easy to install and tune.

The AEM chip is going to be more expensive around $1400 for the PnP version. Their race version should be priced around $1800. The advantage of the AEM chip is that it has the capability of being adjusted by the user like the TEC-II and TEC-III, Link and other systems. Those systems are reserved for more advanced users but can be mastered with practice.

We have two Vishnu Stage zero kits and I'm ordering more TurboXS products which will include their Unichip. If you are looking to purchase any of these systems then either PM me or send me an email. I'm sure we can schedule you a ride with another member so you can compare.

I did not see anyone mention this, but when you order a "unichip", they can usually be programmed to work with the modifications you have. Most of the companies will re-program your chip after you have made more modifications.

I am not sure what all manufacturers offer that service, but Winslow might be able to provide more information on that.

Vishnu is kind of weird about certain mods. Usually they will only remap for exhaust. They believe you don't need an intake and shouldn't run a BOV but they will tune if you visit them. TurboXS will only map for intake and exhaust unless you go to their shop. It pays to live close to all these tuners but it isn't essential. They have a three day turn around if you need to get your ECU remapped.

Link makes and ECU for the WRX that's supposedly user tunable. They have been making one for the Miata for years that's considered the best deal going. There are some problems with the WRX version that I hear is related to an Asian version and a US version. Since I don't have the details, I would recommend looking into it further before purchasing. I also heard a rumor that the AEM unit is a derivative of the Link. Don't know if it's true.

The AEM system is similar to the Link system but more user friendly and it cost less. Link systems are more technical and require much more knowledge to tune.
