Default Boost leak help pls

05 WRX with TBE, Up pipe, SPT air intake and Cobb stage 2 shelf map.

Had boost leak after TBE and Up Pipe install. Thought it was the stock plastic Y pipe from removing and reinstalling stock TMIC. Just remembered I also reused the gasket for the stock BOV.

Installed Ebay Large TMIC and new Y pipe. Now losing 25% pressure in 1st gear and 10% pressure in 2nd and 3rd. Boost leak does make that whistling sound.

** Could this be from the reused BOV gasket? Any other ideas?

Yes, that could very well be your problem.

You may also want to check your uppipe flanges for exhaust leaks. Very common place for leaks. That will keep your boost down too.

how you know if its an uppipe leak is if you dont spool till around 4k or later. itll just keep on spoolings

how you know if its downpipe is sound. itll sound like puffing. or just take paper and hold it above the downpipe. or just feel around it. but that wont cause boost leak because everything already on the way out. not really anything

check the y pipe on the intercooler.

it doesnt matter if you reused the gasket on the bpv. its not a gasket where you can only use it once. its fine.

and the whistling sound could just be the turbo. maybe you werent used to hearing it opposed to after doing a tbe and up then when you can fully hear it.

but its probably a hose that came off somewhere during the install. i highly recomend follow all the inlet hoses and see the connections, wastegate connections and everything. hope it works out

This sounds like what I need to do. The whistle sound is the leak not the turbo, because it only happens when I reach the pressure loss (not the whole time the turbo is spooling). Atleast that made the most sense to me. Btw I did replace the BOV gasket and that was not it.

Thanks much for the tips. Will try that.

yea told you it wasnt the BPV gasket. and what whats your idling boost pressure? and your max boost you hit?

im also getting massive boost leak and maxing out at 12psi so i feel your pain bud.

good luck sourcing it

i HIGHLY recomend you take Soapy water(like major soapy) and put it on the areas you feel might have a leak. and start up the car. if theres a leak, the soap will bubble and jackpot. your free

Update:
Y pipe replaced. Not it.
BOV gasket replaced. Not it. (as stated above)
Checked smaller hoses for obvious problems. None found.
I can hear the turbo spool seperately. This is definately a boost leak. Leak did not appear after up/down pipe + stage 2 install. Leak appeared much later when I uninsalled and reinstalled stock TMIC after friend helped tighten a loose nut on the new DP.

Using stock boost gauge...
Normal read at full boost after stage 2 was .1 MPa (which I believe was.1 MegaPascals, or 1 bar, or 14 psi) at full boost. Now its reading .08-.09 at full boost.

** Have not replaced hose from Manifold to Intercooler. Will try that next. Has anyone else had a leak here when upgrading TMIC?

When I have a day off I'll try the soapy water. Thanks a lot.

Sounds to me like it's the ebay TMIC or the Y-Pipe connections... I bet if you take it off and put your stock tmic back on you will be boosting normal. Just my two cents but if you had no problems until the install of this item why look at everything else on the car first. Good Luck and let us know what the outcome was.

The Leak happened before the new TMIC. I put it on because it came witha new y pipe and I thought it would help.

* I re tightened the hose clamp on the y pipe to turbo and it seamed to boost a tiny bit higher. Maybe, Maybe not.

Did you use gasket sealer on the up pipe gaskets?

No, but as I stated... The leak did not happen just after the exhaust install. It happened months later when I removed the stock TMIC and the cobb heatshield so that a friend could help me tighten a lose nut from the turbo to down pipe. I then reinstalled the stock TMIC and the boost leak started. Now, do you really think the up pipe seal has anything to do with it? because I'm guessing no.

Tonight I tightened some of the hose clamps on the TMIC Y pipe and the boost leak cut down to half! I think the problem is on the turbo to Y pipe connection. Seems like the hose clamp is not strong enough. I need a T clamp (since one snapped off during installation) or 2 normal Napa clamps instead of one. Will try that later.

Car felt better. Boost went from .08 MPa 1st gear and .09 MPa 2nd-3rd gear, to .09 MPa 1st gear and .095 MPa 2nd-3rd gear (and .105 MPa 4th-5th which is higher than before the leak i think). I hope none of that was attributed to the cold air temp.

** Update: Nevermind... boost leak returned to .07 MPa 1st gear and .09 MPa 2nd-3rd gear.

If you order the Ebay Large TMIC: I was starting to doubt, but the Y pipe that came with the Ebay Large TMIC is where the bost leak was. I switched to a T clamp on the y pipe to turbo connection and the boost leak was cut to half, but still there. Purchased samco hoses for WRX and they were too short for the Large TMIC, whoops. Should I have bought the STI ones?
