Default Anyone use fiberglass enclosures in their WRX? Is the cost woth it?

Sorry about the "woth it."

I am thinking about building a custom WRX fiberglass enclosure for the Rex, but have a hard time justifying the cost.

Is the sound quality any different? I know it all depends on who is building it, but say if you compared a custom built MDF box for a 10" sub vs. a custom fiberglass enclosure, all built by the same guy who is hypothetical a pro. Any sound difference?

I am all about stealth and concealment, with keeping all of the usable trunk space available, so I am thinking about it. Any opinions and comments from people who have done this before or have experience in the area?

talk to iv30. he was an autosound installer and lives in the sammamish area in WA. perhaps at the next meet or so....

More or less fiberglass is not as weak as you think. it is very strong and can be reinforced even more if needs be. Either with layers of dynamat, thicker layers of fiberglass and using different cloths for your layers of fiberglass.

Here is a great link if you want to do it yourself.. I'm going to do a spare tire well install myself with fiberglass. If not that, it's going to be a custom molded enclosure that molds to my trunk. Right now the only thing holding me back from finishing my system is the lack of a sub.

That's exactly what I am thinking about doing, a mold to the trunk. I dont like the idea of losing my spare tire. Are you doing it yourself, or are you having it professionally made? Where are you going to place it in the trunk if not in the tire well?

I am having the sides of the trunk behind the wheel wells fiberglassed for a 10" sub on each side. That way no trunk space will be wasted and the spare tire will still be in place.

I'm getting it for about ~200 a side.

One stereo shop I went to a week ago (Magnolia Hi-Fi) wanted $600 a side. I laughed in his face, and asked him: "how many suckers have you sold fiberglass enclosures at that price?" I guess that's what it costs when you live in a ritzy neighborhood.

$200 sounds more like it.

Magnolia charges about 200 for just a custom MDF box, as do a few other places Absurd I tell you

Now anyhow, the enclosure I am going to do myself with the help of iv30(ivan). I'm thinking of something that goes into the corner/rear of the trunk and a similar piece on the other side holding one of my amps.

It's shape or what I'm hoping for will be something just like the link I posted earlier... It will conform to the trunk corner and taper up to the woofer. the amp rack will be the same shape just mirrored to fit the other corner. This way I'll still have my pass through. My sub will be a 10" bostwick most likely and only needs some <.8 cu ft.

just remember... the difference between a good sounding box and a *****ty sounding box is, getting the proper volume for whatever sub you will be using.

So when you make one out of fiberglass, measuring it becomes a bit tricky-er... you have to fill it with water, then measure how much water fit in it, then do the conversion to figure out how many cubic inches of water actually fit in the enclosure.

it is kind-of a b*tch...

Is their a reason why you are building a spot for your amp? Is the car going to be in any shows where you want to have access to it? If not, it seems like a lot of work for something you could throw under your back seat. My $.02

Sidenote: is anyone running an amp under the dash-board, and are you having any cooling problems? I like the idea of putting one of my amps under there for stealthness.

Yes I do enter car shows, and have placed before too So anything new and different is what I want. I do not follow the crowd at all and prefer the underdog in lots of cases.

My mids/high amp is going to be under the front passenger seat. but the sub amp in the trunk for show.

I figured you were going for show, thats cool. It's cool how those flourescent lights turn your car into a purplish looking beast. I especially liked the picture you posted with those beauty's posing in front of the rex. They seemed a little young though

P.S. Nice trophy. The last trophy I got was for playing youth soccer (no it wasnt for most improved player). I wish I could get a trophy
