Default 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show: The Update

Quote:
We're not even up to the Paris auto show yet, but the 2008 Los Angeles auto show is coming up in the fall as well--and some of the launches already confirmed for the L.A. show are split on green trends and on horsepower.

2010 Ford Mustang: You've seen plenty of spy shots of the 2010 Ford Mustang--including some put out there by the company itself, as it tries to keep Camaro mania in check roughly somewhere short of the Obama lunacy. The latest word is that Ford will show off the Mustang at the L.A. show to avoid the collateral damage from Camaro Convertibles and Toyota Priuses and Volt production vehicles in Detroit.

2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and Lincoln MKZ: Ford will show off the revamped 2010 Fusion sedan in Los Angeles as well, along with the new Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ. The Fusion has a new face and an interior with a large navigation-ready screen, not to mention a new hybrid version. The hybrid's for Ford and Mercury only; no Lincoln gas-electric version is planned.

2010 Buick LaCrosse: GM issued a tease photo of the 2010 LaCrosse last week, showing only its nose. We're expecting more details on the new sedan shortly; Bob Lutz says it's one of the nicest things GM's ever done, so who are we to be anything but breathless in anticipation?

2010 Nissan 370Z: There are pics floating around, but only the name's been confirmed by Nissan. The new Z car could be shorter and distinctly lighter than today's car--and European mags are suggesting a version will become the new Renault Alpine.

Nissan Cube: The new generation of the boxy Scion-alike city car emerges this fall at the Los Angeles show, and later, could be the platform Nissan uses to sell electric vehicles in the U.S.

2010 Mazda3: The new Mazda3 is a possibility for an L.A. introduction. Mild styling changes were caught in some spy shots, but details are still trickling in.

Volkswagen Concept R: If it has any intent of following up on the sassy Concept R from 2003, Volkswagen could show a production version of the Elise-fighter sportscar in Los Angeles. A lightweight vehicle with class-leading fuel economy, according to Autocar, the new roadster would undercut the hardtop convertible Eos and would use small four-cylinders and diesels for power, as well as a new DSG transmission.

Mercedes-Benz concept: The details are near zero at this point, but a Mercedes concept due for the Paris auto show in October will be flown to the U.S. for an appearance at the November L.A. show. The German carmaker's also going to bring along the SL65 Black Series, after it flogs the car for the press in the next few weeks.

Volkswagen Touareg TDI: Volkswagen's bringing its latest diesel SUV to the L.A. show. This time around, it's a 240-hp, V-6 diesel with more than 400 pound-feet of torque.

Green Car of the Year: The award, given by our friend Ron Cogan's Green Car Journal, names the vehicle that most advances the cause of efficiency, while reducing the auto world's environmental footprint. Five finalists will be named between now and the delivery of the award in mid-November.

Press days for the Los Angeles auto show are Nov. 19-20, with public days through Thanksgiving. We'll update you on more intros as they're confirmed.

There are several unveilings on that list that I am looking forward to hearing about. What kinds of cars, in your opinion, would make things more interesting?

Just guessing less talk more actual cars on the dealer lots. Lots of talk about this and that power - engine technology for some time now guessing unless we see direct injection econo boxes and family haulers - diesels etc its going to be another "Show us something we'll never see in the dealers show room"

I agree with that. There seems to be a ton of press about new technology from every manufacturer but it seems to be coming to market at a very slow trickle and only a little of that ever makes it to the states.

Some of use don't need to see all fast sports cars anymore to find an auto show interesting. I for one am very interested in the US spec Nissan Cube because i'm seriously considering one as my 2nd car.

I'm really looking forward to 370Z. I think it stands a good chance at being the best affordable Japanese sports car ever. 350hp and lighter weight than the 350Z, with presumably better handling and more chassis rigidity? Yes please!

Question is how high the price goes.

Edit: And I hope it doesn't have the ugly "fang" front fascia some of the "sneak peek" pics have had. =p Also, is the 2010 Mustang getting the rumored 5.0?

^^

base model will probably be around $29k with push start button, etc. I think its not bad because it comes with most of the stuff plus its faster and lighter.

Well, that's a reasonable enough guess, but with EVO/STI creeping up into the high 30K's it would be prudent to expect an increase of more than a grand or two. Not saying it will happen but I won't be surprised if it's a bit more expensive, especially with lighter materials, bigger brakes/rubber to accommodate the new power, etc.

Edit: In fact, on a sidenote: I'M CALLING IT NOW- 6 months from now official pricing comes out for 370z, it starts at mid-$30ks, and all the morons in the forum jack their manpleasers about how overpriced it is

I'm calling it now, and I'm quoting myself when this INEVITABLY happens.
