Question School me on Orlando, Florida. I will be in town next week, Sept 16-20

Staying at the Rosen Shingle Creek resort, which is apparently pretty high end (as per usual with work's conferences).

Although I'll be spending a lot of time at the pool bar, does anyone have suggestions of the "must-go" places of Orlando? Obviously disney world is the town's home base, but we aren't kids. I'd kinda like to spend a day there, but my only free time will be at night

I guess I'll also ask, where are the "touristy" night clubs, restaurants, bars, etc. I don't want to venture into the scary neighborhoods looking for a hole in the wall, but still, hole in the walls are good, as long as I won't get shot trying to get to the front door.

If you go to downtown (Orange Avenue), not sure what kind of bars your into, but there's a couple of places that have live music and cool scene.

These are more 'hip' bars
BBQ
The Social
Backbooth
Independent Bar
The Library

If you're looking for more clubby places

Dragon Room
Latitudes
Roxy
Dolce ? (went there years ago when it was club paris and they had a good latin night)

If you go the UCF area, there's tons of bars as well

I haven't lived in Florida for over a year so some of these places may be closed... I also never went to most of these places, just some of them.

Go back to ATL Danny. If you want the real basic tourist resturants/clubs/walk around and look at crap there is always Universal CityWalk and Downtown Disney.

Good restaurants on Sand Lake Road which is very close to your hotel. In particular, check out Season's 52 (the bar there tends to have nice sites on a Thursday) and Moon Fish is very good as well. There's also a really nice gastro pub in Winter Park (about 20 min away from the hotel) called the Ravenous Pig.

Rosen Shingle Creek has a great golf course which is not terribly expensive. Downtown Orlando and random bars are where the locals hang out, as has been mentioned. In Metro West there is a new bar called Roll that's not too bad. There are local bands playing at House of Blues on some nights for $5-$15. I have looooooootttts of suggestions.

I'd suggest Howl at the moon down I-drive a few minutes from where you're staying. Dueling piano bar where they sing dirty songs and the pianists get drunker as the night goes along.

On wednesday go to Urban Flats downtown, they have a Wine Down Wednesday event. $20 all you can drink wine and appetizers, and the hottest women downtown. It goes from 6-8. I work 3 blocks away from there and thats the spot for happy hour. Friday at Antigua's downtown they do 3-1 drinks until 7 or 8 and then 2-1 until 10.

Other than that the touristy places are I Drive, howl at the moon is decent. City Walk has Pat Obriens which is very similar. And Pleasure Island at Disney is decent too.

For the tourist party atmosphere you can head to Universal Studios City Walk. I was just there and went to the city walk a few nights.

Winter Park is a nice little area in downtown Orlando. Kinda higher-end and no tourists. There is a little restaurant there that is great...something like 310 Park South...Google it. Order the mushroom ravioli for dinner and the pistachio gelado for dessert. Can't go wrong...I try to eat there whenever I'm in the area. The steak sandwich is very good too. Beer is on the pricey side 8-10 bux...so drink your PBR's before you go!

Enjoy!

about 1000 coworkers . But more seriously, there will probably be a group of 10-20 of us going out on the town Thursday night. I know we have a big dinner on Wednesday at the resort that everyone must attend (and it'll be worth it, so I ain't complaining).

BW- how far are you from Orlando?

I'm in Tampa, which equates to about 50 minute drive.

Edit: Thursday night is a bad night for me though. My Managerial Accounting class gets out at 9:45pm. But let me know either way

He'd have more fun in Tampa than O-town. Take him to the Castle and then to a nudie bar.

STiTuner is right - good call on the Antigua. I am guilty of the occasional 3-for-1.

Also depends on the scene you're looking for. Are you looking for dolled-up, high-end bitches or a good time and decent cheap/free drinks? do you want a bar where you can hang out that's close to home? Are we talking pub/restaurant/grill/club? Gimme some direction here because everyone's idea of a good time is different.

At CityWalk, my vote goes for Red Bamboo. Kinda like an ultralounge.

If you're into country at all, there's a bar downtownish called Jesse Black's, main room is country but outside is any kind of music you can imagine - saturday is cheap or free beer? Maybe just for ladies. Also, there is a really cool bar in Festival Bay (near I-Drive) called Cricketer's Arms. Celtic style. Cool bartenders with brogues. Some drink specials and occasional karaoke.

Just some more thoughts . . .

There's other stuff if you're into tea, sake, karate . . . whatever . . . .

The prop. of MoonFish also had a hand in a few other high-endish steakhouses in that area, namely Vito's and FishBones. Vito's used to rock but is hip with the over-40 crowd still.

There is a family named Dowdy that owns an assload of land in the tourist (International Drive) area that had a hand in some of those, too . . . land purchase only or management not sure.

City Walk FTW. A few years back I was leaving one of the big clubs there (can't remember the name) along with everyone because it was closing. In front of the club are stairs and handrails. I decided that I, drunk and untouchable, would slide down one of these rails. The rail wasn't steep so I didn't get any speed. About half way down, I stalled, flipped over, and busted my ass in front of everyone leaving the club....

but yeah....city walk ftw. i love it.

I know those rails! They feel smooth but ride horribly. Trust me I tried to ride on when I was there last month. I stalled out but didn't fall.

Work was slammed, so I didn't get a chance to reply earlier.

I'm definetely not seeking out the high end bitches unless they are hanging out in cheap beer clubs. The older I get, the more I like the country scene, but either way, low-mid budget, no dress code is my style. Chances are, I'll be following the crowd, who will most likely go to the most well known spots (i.e. Orange ave? ). I have some younger coworkers that I know will be into the hip-hop, so I'd like to give them direction. But if Orlando is THAT diverse, I'd also like to help my bosses find a classic rock joint (i.e. Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc.)

Last year in Nashville, I spent a lot of time at Coyote Ugly, and BB King's (and a hole in the wall called Tootsie's), since that huge country bar up there was closed for the week.

almost forgot, on the restaurant front, I'm becoming a connoisseir for baby back ribs, so any suggestion for the best ribs in town would be awesome too.
