Hi guys... Good news and bad news.
My bolt supplier discontinued one of the more important bolts needed to install both the plate and diff brace. They're no longer making 200mm M10 bolts in small runs to stock... I'd have to order something like 1000+ of them in a custom run from now on before they'd even be willing to give me the time of day. Yay me for designing a new product just as the world economy goes to shambles, great timing! ![]() Problem is I can't find anybody else that will supply these bolts in small numbers, so it's back to the drawing board. The good news... I'm already finishing a mock-up of a one piece reinforcement plate to go on the driver's side of the trans. This will serve as both a diff brace and to strengthen the case around gears 1-5. The single plate will surround the entire passenger side of the diff and extend over the section of the case that houses gears 1-5. The same 1/4" cold-rolled high tensile steel plate will be used. It will be designed specifically to fit all 8-bolt 5mt transmissions (in the USDM, that is 1998 and newer, all WRX models included), and will be installable with the trans in the car utilizing the stock trans bolts. I have a 4-bolt trans on my own car, so I will confirm fitment on that as well (for pre-1998 cars). Since this design will not use 200mm bolt lengths in class 10.9, I still may be able to get a class 10.9 bolt set together to replace the stock hardware as well, so I'll be looking into that too. The plastic mock-up will be finished tonight, and I'll have a steel prototype ready tomorrow. Will post pics of the new product soon. A big "Thank you" goes out to the folks who already have the original reinforcements on their cars... Looks like you folks will be a fairly exclusive bunch! Well I am waiting to see what you got going. Trans is out for repair. I am currently replacing the case. Need a case with 177k on it?

I have a plastic prototype complete (easier to work with than steel for modeling it)... Fits on my 4 bolt case too, so it will work with both case styles.
I'm just waiting for some coupling nuts to come in. I have to get them custom made in 10mm x 1.25, so that's a pain in the rear, and the lead time on those was a week. As soon as those come in thurs. or fri., I'll complete a steel proto and the couple of jigs I'll use to build it, then slap a 5mt in my test fixture to make sure it works like it's supposed to. I'm hoping to have something ready to build in a few weeks and something ready to sell a week or so after that. This design uses less parts and is easier to build, plus one plate will cover the diff and the case reinforcement, so it should be a bit cheaper altogether as well. Basically, you can use the factory hardware or I'm also putting together class 10.9 sets in factory sizes. Using factory bolts it will be installable on the car, but you'd probably have to remove the trans to get the factory bolts out and replace with class 10.9 pieces. How it works: On some of the case bolts instead of the factory nuts, you'd install coupling nuts (standoffs). Then the plate bolts to those coupling nuts... It's neat lookin' too, the axle fits through a big hole in the plate and the plate will bolt to the case both above and below the axle, so it provides support around the entire case structure behind the diff carrier. |

So basicaly, it can be installed without dropping the tranny if factory bolts were used, correct?
and if one chooses to use the 10.9 bolts, they would have to drop the tranny. Also, for people who already have the very first design reinforcement plate (ver.1), will they be compatible? |

And indeed, you could "sandwich" the transmission between one of the original plates and one of the new ones as it will be installed on the opposite side for an even greater degree of reinforcement ![]() |

maybe you are going through so many gear sets cuz you abuse your car! hense your name alexthrasher.... iv'e been a subaru master tech for 5 eyars now and i agree they are not sting trans but abuse is why they fail. i have a customer with a 470hp gt35 03 wrx with a stock 5 speed he's been running it for 3 years now but he knows how to drive it. granted he cant launch it at high rpm but its still fast as hell..... |

im interested in this... seems like theres been some time off from the op going into this thread and i've been reading for some more involvement from ds1 but havent seen it so far... Based on the earlier projected cost this doesnt seem that bad an investment. Perhaps this and some stiffer transmission mounts wouldnt do to bad at all...

Hey, looks like that engine will be able to put a gearbox through its paces!
Yeah, production has been on a bit of a hiatus while I redesigned the plate to be installable with the transmission in the car. The new plate looks pretty good, I have the original proto hanging up in the paint enclosure right now in fact. Everything fits together really nicely, and there's plenty of room to spare when you're on your back under a car installing the thing. Actually I'm working on the first run... I'm making 8 of them, It's a small run just to kind kick things back off and work out any of the little kinks I come across in production. I should have them ready to go by the beginning of next week. For those who are interested, I'll post up a pic of the new plate when I get home from work. |
