Thanks for the writeup. I had to use a pitman puller to pop my ball joint. We tried a few, but it ended up being one that autozone sells (not a rental).

The job is a breeze if you have the right tool. Just make sure you line up that pin hole before you put the hub back together .

Before I read this post I replace the drivers side front axle seal. to do this I removed retainer. The problem is, I didn't mark it or count how many turns it took to remove. I thought I was done, drove it to work and noticed it was leaking... bad. That's when I found this post. Now what do I do. rebuild? I looked up the pinion adjustment and the transaxle might need to be on its side to make the adjustment. Does anyone know if and how to check the backlash and pinion adjustment without removing the tranny? If I can get it to seal, how dangerous is it to just put in the retainer until it doesn't easily turn?

Bump on this thread..... Great writeup so far,but..... now it's a 2007 OBW.. no stub axle. I was reinstalling a rebooted drivers side axle and noticed the seal spring dangling in the hole...

So can you replace this seal without removing the 07' "bearing retainer cover" and how?

bump again.... Other info now found. The 2007 OBW seal on the automatic trans can be inserted without removing the diff cover. The standard trans has to have the cover removed to install the seal..
On both transmissions, you also have to use a special tool to insert the new/rebooted axle into the differential so the circlip doesn't damage the new seal when passing through it...

Noob question. Do I have to drain the tranny first?

I didn't and lost probably around a quart of oil.

this is a super old bump, and i'm sorry, but was hoping maybe somebody would answer my question. I have an 07 wrx so it is a stubless axle, and I am replacing my transmission oil seal on the passenger side. I can't get the differential retainer to start the threads to screw back onto the diff case. Like in the picture below you can see the threads but the threads on the diff retainer can't reach them because they are blocked by the roller bearing which is pushed out too far.

I'm assuming that since by threading in the diff retainer i'm adjusting the backlash/preload that the roller bearing should push in with some force but I am unable to press it in enough to get the threads started.

Any suggestions!?
