Default Can someone school me on Open Source tuning?

From what I understand, my 02 RS is able to be tuned via Open Source tuning. However, there is nothing covering this in the NA whitepaper (which is clearly directed more toward the previous body style cars), so can someone give me some direction here?

I understand I'm going to need at least... and OBD II cable, a laptop, and some sort of software. But looking for where to go from there. Is there a thread somewhere on this subject I cannot find?

Go check out www.romraider.com and verify that your model year and ECU are included in the list of compatible ECU's... And then do some reading on that website. they have a FAQ section that will give you some basic info about what you can do with their software, the risks you will be taking if you are not being cautious and what you will need to get started. There are a couple of other free, opensource ECU editing programs that u can use to scan DTC's and flash/read rom images, etc etc. Id start on romraider.com and get the latests version and defanitions, then get the latest version of ECU flash and use that for "pulling" and "flashing" the ECU's ROM's. And then, direct future questions about ECU tuning to the "tuning" forum here on NASIOC. you will get better, more timely info there. Good luck. Oh yeah, you will need a tactrix cable to hook your laptiop to your OBD-II port. There is a new tactrix cable called "2.0" and it will eventually offer laptop free logging and editing on the fly if im not mistaken... but that may be only for the newer CAN-BUS (2008+) ECU vehicles. The older style (and cheaper) cable may be all you need. You can get info on that too at the romraider site and probably at the tactrix site www.tactrix.com

Open source is only available for 32-bit N/A models (MY05+) OP, perhaps a piggyback or standalone ECU... depending on your mods and goals for the car.

You can tune your '06 via open-source, if that was in fact your question.

wrong. Romraider's opensource tuning software is useable on cars as early as 01 for the JDM stuff and the USDM is later i know, not sure on the year exactly. Thats why i told the OP to go check it out and see. I would guess that the USDM stuff for the 2.5RS is 05, but I dont know.

Here you go, ProDarwin - SubieSMART It's just beyond idea phase and looks to have some serious hills to climb, but hey, everything starts somewhere.

Your 062.5i can be reflashed with new maps or modified versions of your stock map, etc etc... obviously read the RR FAQ's and understand whats going on. id imagine that there is the risk of damaging your ECU if you flashed a incompatible map (different ECU MY/vehicle, etc etc)

For N/A (Naturally Aspirated) USDM open source starts 05+:

Earlier support is for turbo's, both JDM and euro. How am I wrong??? I implied he has a USDM based on his location.

LTRacer, you're right and RaceFaceXC is wrong on this one. The 04 and older RSes cannot be tuned with RomRaider/EcuFlash. SubieSmart is working on it, but don't hold your breath.

So, to the OP, your 02 at this time cannot be tuned and I really have little belief that the SubieSmart people will deliver anything soon. In several years, maybe.

I read your original post as "ONLY the MY05 N/A 32 bit roms can be used with opensource"... I was giving examples of other roms from other earlier years that are also tunable via opensource so that someone reading didnt think that the 05+ 2.5RS/i's are the only cars that can opensource tuned.

It's currently impossible to tune any pre-2005 NA ECUs with opensource. Their ROMs can't be read by opensource software.

I'm assuming its based on fuel and durations..which yield you HP gains....other than that you'd still be needing hardware along with this software to work very well..such as Delta Cams...this is the only way i can see this becomes a benefit for the user.

Tuning can do several things. On a fully stock engine, it will make the car more drivable and make the engine run better/safer. On an engine with modification, even rather simple bolt-ons, it will allow the full exploitation of the modifications for maximum power.

Check the nasioc link RaceFaceXC gave.

Oldhat is one of the guys heading up subiesmart.

Ispeed cracked the older ECUs. I would hope it will not that long.

Peace,

Greg
