Default Used Oil Analysis: Pennzoil Platinum in 2005 2.5RS

i had posted this in the N/A forum but thought it may be helpful here as well.

Just thought i'd share my most recent oil analysis for my EJ253. as shown in the report its sitting at about 45k miles and this is the longest i've ever run oil at over 6k miles before changing (i'm old school and have had a hard time giving up the OMG CHANGE EVERY 3,000!!!1! mentality.). its had synth oil in it since new and i always use either Purolator or OEM filters.

my goal is to use synth oil to enable me to run the engine hard and still have extended use of the oil.

i drive the car at least 45 miles a day and drive up to the mountains for some driving fun about 2 or 3 times an oil change. i was also able to fit an autocross in as well. this was also used in the middle of summer where we see some really high ambient temps (atlanta)

i may look into a 5W-40 in light of my autocrossing...or maybe wait until next summer to try with the daytime temps going down now.

looks good!
Pennzoil Platinum is one of the better mainstream oils IMO.

Thumbs up

Very nice!

As long as your wears stays the same, you might be fine with the 5w-30. This is much better than a report that I saw on PP from an STI. N/A Subes are easy on oil.

At what mileage did you add the make-up oil?

Dennis, i went through exactly 1 quart over the 6,000 miles. typically i check the oil at every stop for gas since the oil is good and warm (300 miles or so) and add little bit to bring it back up to the top dot on the dipstick.

it's never been inconsistent with it's oil usage so i'm not worried but i do keep a hawk eye on it.

I use this oil/weight in my N/A Legacy with 6K mile intervals. Good stuff.

Ok, just making sure you didn't add the 1 qt. the day before you sent in the uoa.

You might have less usuage with the 10w-30 in summer with your driving conditions, IMO. It's the same thickness as the 5w-30 when hot, but is has a slightly higher High Temp High Shear. It also has a better NOACK volatility.

just an update. ran the oil longer per Blackstone's advice and things look pretty good, i think. this was over the course of 1 autocross, lots of highway miles and using a subaru black filter and subaru OEM air filter.

i have Rotella T 5W-40 in the car now because i'm going to be autocrossing the car more in 09 and i'd like to see how it stacks up against PP considering it's cheaper at my local autozone.

can anyone explain to me the seemingly large fluctuations in molybdenum, calcium, and magnesium? i don't have a very clear understanding of those elements and what they mean.

About the fluctuating numbers: It could be anti-wear plating happening that causes the numbers to be lower, but in this case it wouldn't surprise me much if it's just a slight tweak to the add pack?

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how the Rotella T does for you. Nothing in this report would make me want to move to a thicker fluid. I'd run this stuff for 7500 and see what I saw. You might even be able to make 10k?? I wouldn't go quite that far without checking on it first, but then I'm used to turbo Subie UOAs.

Personally I would have stuck with the PP at 7000-7500 miles. Not much furthur, keep getting UOAs tho.
