Default 2k2 ts, new filter=exhaust leak type sound?

hello, so i'm hoping someone can give me some help here, today i replaced my old air filter with a new drop in fram filter. every thing seamed fine until i stepped on the gas hard. when i do this, it sounds like i have an exhaust leak in my engine bay but only when i'm above 2.5k rpms and when i'm in motion. if my car is in neutral it sounds normal even when i rev it up to 3.5 trying to mimic the noise. anyone have any ideas?

my car is a 2002 impreza ts(158k on the engine) normal maintenance 3k oil changes, all stock but rims. i've checked and rechecked the fram part number to be sure its correct, and it is. i've also checked the 3 vac hoses to make sure they are sealed tight. and the worm clamp at the intake(where plastic/rubber meets metal).

when we did the filter(we did it at my dads body shop since i was in that town when i got the filter rather than near my house) that was all we did, nothing with the exhaust or anything else that i can think of that might account for this sudden change.

is it possible for a new filter to make that much of a difference? am i really unlucky and it was a coincidence that i get an exhaust leak 2 minuts after changing a filter?

anything anyone can come up with would be a big help

thanx
dan

(mods if i put this in the wrong section, please move, and thanx)

I get this slight air whooshing sound too, but I only heard it once I removed the fiberglass hood heat protector thing.

It definitely has to do with the filter being 'less restrictive' is what I'm saying.

Same thing here except with K&N. I would just drive it for now. See if it gets any better.

thanx, it seems a little quieter(or i'm just getting used to it) i'm just not sure why it only happens when my car is under load, if i'm in neutral i still don't get anything but my normal engine noise. if i think of it going to see if i can get someone to ride around with me for a few mins tomorrow and record it.
thanx again
dan
