Default Grinding Noise, possible throw out bearing?

I have a 2004 wrx and a friend of mine just did a clutch job on it. We put an act street disc, pp, and streetlight fly. It did make any noise before the tranny was dropped out of it. When I drove it home it sounds like it is making a rotating grinding noise when im declerating mostly in second and in third. If I push in on the clutch the noise goes away. If im sitting in neutral it doesnt make it, niether in the cold. Only downshifting in those gears will make the almost kind of rattle noise.

well if its rattleing when you depress the clutch.... does it fee like it slips/chatters or doesnt shift into any gears smoothly.... maybe the pressure plate wasnt tightened properly or all the way... and throw out brearing mainly make niose when the clutch is depressed not released. the only other thing i can think of its that the clutch disc wasnt linded up properly and may have been damaged... also did the flywheel come with a pilot bearing if not did you install one? if so how was the condition of it... theres so many possiblitites

Its not a throw out bearing. The throw out bearing only does work when the clutch is depressed, otherwise its not moving.

Sounds more like an issue inside the gear box. 2nd and 3rd are usually different assemblys and not on the same shift fork, i assume subaru is this way but i dunno for sure. So its probably not a synco issue, possibly something along the lines of an internal bearing failure or something on the imput shaft, i dunno i'd have to be there.

Grinding/rattling noise is normal under deceleration with aftermarket clutches/lightweight flywheels. Its annoying, drives me crazy, but I've gotten used to it

All sounds like possible ideas, its really hard to know exactly what it is til we got underneath it again. Thanks for the input guys, the car is going back to the garage this weekend. I hope its not somthing that will forever be there! You right it gets really annoying.

Check the shifter linkage. I have the same problem right now and it seems to be part of the linkage rattling back and fourth.

Did you change anything else? Check to make sure nothing is hitting your drive shaft. Do you have a DSS One piece drive shaft? Those things tend to hit and make niose. Also there is a gaurd on the bottom engine, so rocks and such dont get up in the clutch area. Its right below were the engine and gearbox meet. I have seen where people have jamed that up into the clutch area causing all kinds of racket. Just a few things to check. After all else fails, drain your gearoil and check to make sure nothing is going on within the gearbox. If so, then maybe someone took it out for a "test drive" after the clutch install?

Also, try changing the air pressure in your tires a bit.
Stock WRXs get "deceleration noise" and its because when decelerating in gear their is no differential loading between the input and output shafts which means they can rattle. Buy upping the psi difference between the front and back the tranny is slightly loaded and the problem goes away.

If it makes noise when the clutch is out, isn't that the pilot bearing? But thats more squeeking and annoying then grinding.

bro i've got the same problem with my trans. I even bought the clutch through STI (street disc) and it makes that winding noise when decelerating, it is killing me so if you get any answers from this weekend please keep us posted.

Nothing new, its starting to go away actually. Quited down a lot. I drained the gearoil and checked that, theres nothing wrong with the drive shaft or anything underneath with rattling up. My friend who put the clutch in said it was the aluminum flywheel and that his car did it a little too. Idk hope the noise goes away once its all broken in, keep you posted. Thanks for the help guys
