I've also been told the weather in Minnesota isn't doing too hot either, they're also having a late Spring.

Glad I'm not on Facebook anymore, I have the feeling my sarcasm would hit a peak high with all the "ERMAHGERD ERTZ SNERRING" pictures posted everywhere. Here comes the "Welcome to Alaska" spam.

Off that note, maybe with it snowing "on-time" this year, or a little early, maybe spring will arrive at a better time too. I can't remember the last Halloween in snow...

Question New to Alaska

OK, I've read the AK FAQs page, but since it was posted in '08, I just had to ask: What kind of tires do you guys like on an Impreza in the winter? I've lived and driven in cold climates before (Chicago, Wisconsin, Sierra Nevada, Colorado,) but when you arrive here, people make everything sound so intimidating! Ours came with a 225/60R 17 (It's new; we bought it when my husband interviewed here last February, after slipping, sliding, and getting stuck in our crap-box rental car). Anyway, my last snow-driving experience was at Lake Tahoe 8 or so years ago when I got waved thru the CHP chain inspection in my Legacy w all-weathers ("It's a Subaru!"), but it sounds like tire technology has improved a lot since then. I've basically been terrified into buying studded tires for my first Alaskan winter, and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a tire AND a reputable dealer/ installer. I came across one that will store your off-season tires (which sounds awfully nice with our limited storage space, no garage) but they had some awful yelp reviews. Anyway, suggestions? Thanks for staying with me to the end of this rambling message... (PS I moved up from Northern California, where, apparently, we both talk and drive faster than folks do up here, so I'm looking for me-proof safety)PPS Most of my driving will be in Anchorage, except for occasional weekend recreation out of town.

Studded: iPike RS
Studless: Blizzak WS70.

It comes down to whether or not you do more city or highway driving. I'd recommend studded for intown, and studless for highway.

Pretty much sums it up well. You are welcome to search the AKIC for "winter tires" and find a multitude of threads, complete with opinions from years of driving on one style or another, but in the end it boils down to what Carter posted. I commute and prefer studless, however will be running studs due to finding a great deal on CL.

Be careful out there folks. Years past, we loose 2-3 of our fleet of WRX/STI this first week of snow, a tradition I would like to see go away!

With these great cars and their high capabilities…there is no doubt who is at fault.
