Default Is it even worth painting my car a different color?

I hear its a pain to change color of your car with the DMV. Anyone done it before with no hassles? Think its worth it? My car needs a new paint job anyways..

to change the color of your car with the DMV? who told you that crap?
thats just a useless little comment on your registration. i would think any year you go in to renew your registration, you could simply tell them you had it painted. most they'd do is go outside and look at it/check vin's etc. then you'd be on your way. What does the DMV really care what color your car is?

Or just leave it and don't give a rat's. if an officer ever notices when he pulls you over, he can always double-check the vin's to be sure too. just tell him it was painted.

Of course the real question is: is a color change worth it compared to a re-paint in the same color? or if you want a factory color, maybe just go get a new car instead of a several thousand dollar paint job.

Depends on if you want to just do it..or do it right..and by do it right i mean full teardown with engine out and interior bits removed in order to be able to paint not only the outside black, but get your door jams, engine bay, rain gutters, etc. etc. Then if you do it at a reputable shop with good paint and all those man hours that add up...unless it's a show car, i'd say wait it out till the next new one and order what you really want then

If its a daily driver its not worth the time, trouble and cash to do it right.
Better off trading it for the color u want.
2 do it right its a full tear down cause someone buyin it from u in the future isnt going to want silver door jambs.
I changed the color of 2 mini trucks back in the day and its no hassel at all. When u renew the registration I just told them it was a diff color.

My older brother had minor trouble with a used corvette he has...he was pulled over and his car is like an aqua color and according to the DMV it's white...the cop gave him a bit of a hard time but he explained that he bought it this aqua color...he'd been driving it this way for a few years and this was the first problem he had with it.

not only that but when u paint it the value goes down
and when u wanna sell it nobodys gonna buy it because you painted it and they will think that something happened to it

yeah, if you want a color change as drastic as silver > black, you might as well just sell it and buy a black one. unless you've got big bucks into engine and trans work, its not worth keeping. Take you're time, strip off what you do wanna keep, and get it sold for enuf to buy one you like (or better).

Plus, like what was said above, factory paint is better than most aftermarket jobs. Unless you're gonna pay serious dough to get a good quality job with awesome paint and prep, it just won't last the same. And thats even giving some ground because subaru's paint is so thin from the factory...

And the time or cash needed to disassemble that much of your car and paint and re-assemble, you might think twice about investing that much... Just gonna guess you have a fairly stock stock 04 STi, probably worth 18-20k. no point in putting 5k into paint, when you could just sell it, and buy one even better with the same 23-25k.
