In relation to a thread a couple days ago, or maybe last week about the human hearding instinct...

Why are most people so stupid that they can't overcome that instinct? For example, when leaving a movie theater. There are 2 doors in which to exit, yet almost everytime people will wait in a single file line to exit through only one door in which everyone else is leaving?

And on another one no human stupidity - why is that whenever an elevator door opens (the person waiting for the elevator always assumes they are the only person who could possibly be wanting to use that elevator) they always instantly try to enter the elevator? Not thinking that before they enter, some people may need/want to get off the elevator before that person can get on the elevator?

this is my question for you :

why is it that the "ringing tone" comming from the callers telephone headset is not synchroed with the destinations phone ring ???

thank you
the ring that you hear when someone is calling you is produced by your phone receiving the signal that a call is incoming and produces whatever ring the hardware is set for. It's not synced because it is two different sets of hardware and happens across a distance.

Answer to the first: People are lemmings.

Answer to the second: People are rude and selfish

Most people follow others because it is the simplest thing to do. They don't have to think or make their own decisions. Some of it also is because people don't like to "break out" and be considered a rogue or independent, to take a risk means the possibility of being wrong (like if they try to go through the other door marked Exit only to find it bolted and locked).

On the second, most people that stand in an elevator stand off to one side and therefore aren't seen when the doors start to open and the reaction is for the person coming on to start walking in. However, people should be courteous and apologize and let the person(s) off the elevator first.

i implied no such thing! you could have aquired some of your wealth of knowledge through the use of the internet. you've referenced many a web page during the course of this topic, and i was curious as to how you've come across these, which is why i asked the question, which you still have not answered, you know the longest word in the english dictionary, but not the name of the search engine you used to find it?

Glass "made of sand" is made of silicon dioxide. Sand is technically the same thing but it picks up impurities along the way. little bits of earth-poo that discolor or mix with the sand to make it that brownish color. kinda like how in quartz crystals its mostly clear except some hazy or white parts.

Glass is clear for the same reason water is clear. It can't absorb visible light. The light passes through it and is on its merry way. It also refracts light the same way glass does, only to a different degree. The speed of light decreases as it passes through certain objects. That is what causes diffraction.

Fun fact about glass: its not a "liquid" like most people try to tell you. they only want to sound smart and get with your girlfriend. Its an "amorphous solid." that's a solid with no crystalline structure. watch your girlfriend if "that guy" reads this thread.

I tried to find an answer for you on the net but no luck...I think there are other factors such as balloon size, altitude, how high you want to lift it, for how long, etc. etc.

Find the difference in density of helium & air at sea-level and some temerature. Then you should be able to calculate the volume of helium needed to lift x amount of weight.

PV = nRT
D = n/V

D = P/RT

Dry Air - R = 278
25% helium/75% air - R = 760

P = 101325 Pa at sea level
T = 22C = 295.15 K

D(air) = 1.235 Kg/m^3
D(He/air) = 0.452 Kg/m^3

Difference = 0.783 Kg/m^3

250 lbs = 113.64 Kg

Volume of Helium/Air mixture = 113.64 / 0.783 = 1451 m^3

Obviously, a larger % helium gas would have a higher R value which would lower the volume needed. Temperature and pressure will also effect this number.

Why is it that as soon as I have a beer, my contacts start to dry out... a LOT! I mean, if I drink a lot of beer, I can understand dehydration. But even after one beer, as soon as I get up to walk around, the wind from walking just dries out my eyes (and contact lenses) almost immediately. It sucks.

try soaking your lenses in the beer...

Seriously, I think your eyes naturally dehydrate quicker than what you consider dehydration. Your body probably just starts to work on things quicker.

Sempai means senior...

kohai is the opposite of it and means something like lesser/lower

it's like a senior in high school is the sempai of a sophomore.

JGard - Alchohol dehydrates every part of you. That's what a hangover is after all. dehydration. Most of the parts of your body get water directly. Your eyes are only hydrated when you blink. There are no blood vessels in your cornea (unless you have been wearing contacts for several years. Yourblood vessels begin to encroach into your cornea). That part of your body depends on you blinking to be washed over with water. If your whole body isn't getting the normal amount of water, including the underside of your eyelids, then its difficult for your eyes to stay hydrated. Every time you blink when you're drinking your eyes are getting less water than they're used to. On top of that, there are probably people smoking around too, and the smoke is compounding the effect.

I have this also. it is from things in the back of your throat called trenches (i think, can't remember actual word). what they are is basically a pocket forms from a cut in the back of your mouth that food gets trapped into that slowly forms a sedimentary particle. the way to get it to close back up is gargle with saltwater and baking soda (nas-tay) and try to keep it free from food.
