Default EJ257 swap, dash lights going out when I hit the brakes...

Quick version, I will elaborate later but I thought I'd see if it was a quick / common fix...

STi swap in my 01 RS, when I hit the brakes the dash lights go out, when I let off the brakes they turn back on. Crossed wire, short, fuse, whats going on? Anyone?

Help??

Stock dash and all that as well. When I say dash lights I mean the gauge cluster (speedo / tach) and the hvac stuff.

Thats weird, Could it possibly be a crossed connection therefore not letting enough power to all the controls?

If it was a fuse it would say blown right?

Good luck with finding your answer

It's strange because all the lights and stuff work perfectly fine. No dimming, nothing. Radio works great, all signals, etc totally fine. It's only when I hit the brakes... like there is a short, or a crossed wire. And the only lights that turn off are the gauge cluster lights and the hvac/radio lights. Map lights and dome light and all the exterior lights are unaffected.

Check to see if any wires are getting pinched when thw brake pedal if pressed. The brake light switch maybe grounding out also. Do you get rear brake lights? Is it a manual? If so are you sure it is the brake and not the clutch pedal/switch?

The lights in your dash don't take that much power and if you lose the ground, pinched wire, you will not blow a fuse. Even if they are grounding out you may have to hold the pedal in for awhile before a fuse would blow. Is the Radio OK?

Peace,

Greg

It is a manual.

Quick visual check does not reveal any wires being pinched when brake pedal is pressed. It occurs at the exact moment the brake lights turn on - even the lightest pressure causes the lights to go out.

How would I check the brake light switch to see if it is grounding out? I do get rear brake lights.

Radio is okay, the lights turn off but thats it. CD in the CD player will still play, clock holds time, etc.
