Default 02 WRX. 105K service. What should I do and how much should I pay?

Well I've been looking for a place to get my 105K service done....

Most of the places I asked are quoting in the $1000 range.
This includes
--- new timing belt
--- water pump
--- water pump gasket
--- thermostat
--- thermostat gasket
--- new tensioner
--- new pulleys

Also, some service shops are suggesting I check the cam seals while they are in there...

I don't have the time or skills to do this myself so I'm going to have to take it to a shop.

What's your recommendation?
- How much should I expect to pay?
- And is it really necessary to replace things oher than the timing belt - for example the tensioner and pulleys?

The price you got quoted is pretty much standard for all shops around the Bay Area (besides the stealerships).

Yes, tensioner and pulleys are recommended to replace as well.

Do it right the first time, so you won't have to cough up more bills for repair later.

ahem ... the dealerships (Carlsen and Santa Cruz) are quoting the same price too. Which is why I'm wondering if anyone has been able to do this for less?

i have never replaced the idler pullies when doing a t-belt, only the little one next to the tensioner. the waterpump does not need to be replaced unless it is leaking, unlike with hondas where the recomend you replace the pump with the belt.

So, for the 105k service, it makes sense to
--- replace timing belt
--- replace thermostat
--- replace thermostat gasket
--- replace tensioner
--- replace 1 pulley (as above)

Is this a good list? What about the cam seals? Does it make sense to replace these?

You're just not looking in the right place.

http://licmotorsports.com/306090k.htm

Once you go there, you will NEVER again mind the drive. You won't complain about the gas or bridge toll you're paying vs. having the job done right the first time every time.

It's not the drive I complain about it's the time

But, see, it's the same question cropping up again. Water pump replacement recommended by LIC. And tensioner is <quote> *HIGHLY RECOMMENDED* <endquote>

Is this true? Tensioner recommended?
