I hear you, there's not much clearance for the rear install (I left the wheels on and had the car on t he ground). I ended up just putting the clip on the car, putting a block (kitchen cutting board) in the wheel well to protect the tire, and drilling a pilot hole through the plastic liner. Then I pulled the liner back just enough to get a drill in and widen the pilot hole with a 1/2 inch bit. After that, it bolted right up.

I hand-tightened those screws, the ended up taking the philips head bit/tip of my magnetic screwdriver, putting it in the screw, and turning it with some pliers until it was good and tight. Even the offset driver that RA sells was too big to fit in that space. It probably added about a 1/2 hour to the install time. Some of that was just figuring out what I could use to get at those screws. Time consuming, but effective.

Default Gas mileage

I am seriously considering buying the 2009 OBS in silver. I love it. But, what kind of gas mileage are you all really getting? I drive about 100 miles a day for work and live in a rather hilly, seasonal area, so MPG is very important to me too. Thanks for the help!

I've had mine (Silver OBS) for about 3 weeks, I just filled up the tank, and from the odometer and gas added, I was getting about 26 mpg. The "avg mpg" gauge is saying 26 mpg as well.

Since the refill, the avg gauge has been at about 28.8. This is because my commute is mostly freeway. I'd wager a guess that a realistic average is closer to 23-25, unless you drive pretty economically. I think I get somewhere in the 23-24 range when I'm driving around town, cuz I see the "avg mpg" gauge take a massive hit when I do short hops like that.

I really really wanna wring 30mpg out of this guy, but I doubt I can do it w/o using hypermiling techniques

that black OBS is one fine specimen. My color choices were down to black and silver, but the silver one had fewer miles and had a manual transmission, so there we go.

I have a 2.5i, but spec wise is practically the same.

At 43k miles I'm still getting a solid overall average of 27.6 or 27.9 (gauge and hand checked). I drive mostly highway. My highway averages are between 28-32mpg. I don't drive around town enough to measure it, but I would guess that average is about 23-25mpg. I drive pretty normal or tame most of the time, except when I get in a mood a couple times a week. My commute is 70 miles a day roundtrip on fairly level roads in pretty normal weather, at or slightly above posted limit of 65. I use defrost and AC minimally.

Based on the highway average of 27 given by the EPA, I'm pretty happy with that being my overall average. I keep up all maintenance also.

If that meets your expectations, you'll be happy.

Default temperature guage

I can't find any info about an exterior temp guage. Is this not an option? Many vehicles have them in the rear view mirror. I only see an option for compass or compass with home link. I would much rather know how cold/warm it is ,than what direction I am headed. That is what a GPS is for. Anyone know if an outside temperature gueage is an option on the '09 OBS? Thanks

Unless I'm misunderstanding you completely, it's standard on all 08 and 09's, it's built into the clock, mpg, gauge. My 2.5i has it, I'd be shocked if any other model didn't.

Excellent, I was hoping it was there. Gotten kinda spoiled with a temp guage on my current car. Nice to know when it may be icy. Subaru doesn't list it when you build one online. Thanks.

I think it's not listed because it's not that significant a feature.

I haven't experienced this myself, but when I was flipping through the owner's manual, it said that the exterior temp gauge will flash (or something else will light up) when the temperature gets below a certain point, so you know there is risk of icy-ness.

My friend's Audi A6 has a similar feature where you see a snowflake next to the exterior temperature on the driver info LCD

37 Farenheit, but it will not flash if the temp at start is 37 or less.

Has anyone considered (or done) an HID retrofit for these? How hard (or expensive) is it to source a full kit from an STI?

Is it more worth it just to get a quality retrofit from a vendor like Lightwerkz?

I'd like to see some pics. I was thinking of getting 35% all around, but haven't figured out what to do.

I was thinking of doing 20% for the rear and rear sides only. Thoughts?

Eh, if I had the cash, I'd drop my underguard and pick up the lip.
