Exclamation idea for cause of low oil pressure

well after full warmup and just normal driving for a while at idle my cars oil pressure on my stri oil pressure gauge thats tapped into the gally plug reads between 5-8 psi?????? WTF is the cause of this posible reasons for this. im scared im going to spin a bearing at idle. When rpms increase so does the oil pressure but the idle pressure is scaring me a tad bit.

Did you just install this gauge or was it reading normal in the past and then now started reading low?

edit: I see where you had 15psi in the past. I'd first check the area around the sensor to make sure it's sealed good.

I'd get a mechanical gauge to double-check the pressure.

I'd wonder why it changed if you had 15 psi before, but 5-8 psi at idle isn't a problem by itself. You won't spin a bearing with that oil psi at idle.

Definatly double check with a mechanical gauge. I had the same problem with my prosport oil press gauge. It started reading low and erratic. I checked it with a mech gauge and it was fine.

never do i hit 95 psi at cruising around 3k im between 60-70psi my gauge must be off i am guessing o well **** it ill learn to adjust so long as it doesnt hit 0 and if it does and my engine still runs ill know its probably a bad sending unit.

All you need is 10-12 psi /1000 rpm. If you are idling at 750 rpm that is a perfectly acceptable hot oil pressure.

If it is still that low at 2000 rpm then you have an issue to investigate.
Oil pressure will also vary with oil viscosity and temperture.

it goes up with rpms which is a good thing, and at cruising speeds its a little below 80psi so i think im good. thanks agian for the quick responses.

my blitz gauge is reading low and is erratic as well. i've been meaning to check the sensor/gally plug for corosion since it gets ground through the sensor casing/plug.

hmm ive got a similar issue. my oil pressure gauge reads less tyhan 20 at idle usually around 10 psi. the warning light comes on (the aftermarket gauge light not the cluster dummy light)

when driving the gauge sits around 120 psi. the factory oil light is functioning properly but never comes on. do you think something is wrong with the gauge>?

My Autometer guage, tee'd with the factory sensor (idiot light) under the alternator reads 35 lbs. at idle and 80 lbs. + at 3,000 rpms when fully up to operating temps while running
Redline 10-30 oil.

seriously i dont know the specs on the ej20 but anything below 20-25psi at idle
is def. not good.

using castrol, if you pulled the oil pressure sensor and installed an manual gauge on a hot start and didnt get at least 20psi, i would pull the oil pan and look at a clogged pick-up tube or "strainer" as old timers like to call em.

castrol sux IMO.

I've heard of more than a few Electric oil pressure senders mounted in the galley plug underneath the intercooler going bad from the heat down there . Happened to me actually .

Same here.
OP- try swapping out your sending unit w/ a new one and double-check the gauge w/ a mechanical one.

these engines seem to shear oil very quickly and using the wrong oil(way too much of that here due to lack of logical thought process and wives tales) seems to lead to a LOT of spun bearings and I think that this low oil pressure at idle is one of the big indicators of the wrong oil being used past the point where it has sheared beyond providing proper lubrication

but ive never even thought about this issue and have nothing to add because it just wont matter anyway

Sound like a motor ready to let go soon. I recently had low pressure of 17.4psi with bad weight of oil. I switch to valvoline max life. Now at 26psi oil pressure. Read my thread. Then consider another oil as your motor is worn. Change your oil quick. Normal pressure is 20 to 30 psi.

The spec is 8 psi or greater at 800 rpm, so no, below 20-25 psi is certainly not the limit. PSI has alot to do with oil viscosity, a heavier oil is simply going to resist flowing more. Also, increased psi doesn't mean the oil is actually doing a better job, it just means less of it is actually reaching the bearings. (the oil pump is static displacement, higher psi means lower flow) Engines generally can idle at a VERY low psi without issues.
