Default Is Colin committed to winning???

I would have to say yes. From Autosport.com this morning. Anyone want to question this guy now?

[Colin McRae is prepared to sacrifice a finger for the sake of his World Rally Championship hopes this year.

The Ford star broke a little finger on his left hand in a huge crash on the Tour de Corse last week. Despite the injury, McRae will compete on this weekend's Rally Catalunya. But if he finds his driving is impeded by finger trouble, he has told his team that he is willing to have it amputated.

Ford's European director of motorsport, Martin Whittaker, told Radio 5 Live: Colin said to me a couple of days ago that if [the finger] does get in the way in Catalunya - and we've got four or five rallies coming up that we know we can win - 'I'll just have it taken off'.

"It's not a decision he's going to take lightly, but I think it shows the commitment and level of effort these guys are willing to put into careers."]

This has to be a joke. If it isnt, I wouldnt say he should be committed. That is seriously the dumbest thing I have ever heard. What's next, liposuction to shave weight from the total weight of the vehicle?

Unhappy

I don't know if it's a joke or not, but from the quotes I read it sounds like his finger nearly exploded.

<speculation>
If his finger was injured badly enough, he may not have a high likleyhood of regaining much use, anyways.
</speculation>

Besides, we all know he's a lunatic anyways!

My finger was stuck between the dash and the steering wheel. I managed to free my hand but the side of the car was pushed against my leg and it took me a while to get out because I wasn't sure if my leg was broken. It split the small finger wide open, burst the tendons and has broken the bones as well. It's not so good.
Ah, and I thought the British were supposed to be the masters of understatement...

If he is committed to winning, learning to manage his "red mist" issue would go much farther than lopping off a digit.

Can I get a brief description on this "red mist?" I've read it like 5 times on this board this week and I'm not sure where it comes from. It sounds to be when you get way to crazy about winning and end up driving unsafe.

I think you've got it. It's basically diving out of control or emotionally. I think it usually refers more to wheel-to-wheel racing, where drivers can start to "battle" with each other, especially if contact has been made.

Schumacher driving into Damon Hill in '94, into Villneuve in '97.

I'd like to put Senna punting Prost off the road in 90 at Suzuka, but I get the feeling he waited a whole year to do that.

Default Now It Makes More Sense...

Reading through this thread, I thought it was british dry humor joking about lopping off an excess digit to be able to win...

But if it is a pinkie w/torn tendons, then I'm thinking he wasn't joking... With the paddle shifter and other controls, if it interferes w/being able to race, as the finger heals, then it makes sense to me that he may seriously be thinking about amputation... Ford is looking better this season, they may be pretty stout on gravel...

Hmm...Let see I have a million dollar career. I smash my pinky beyond use, which may interfer with my ability to perform my job which could effect my income. The little guy goes. I can live without raising the little guy while drinking tea. Heck, with Colin's money, he could by a prostestic pinky for the tea problem.

The question is how much is your pinky worth?

Colin's pinky (or lack of) is worth a lot more than yours or mine.

*sigh*

If he does lose that finger it will be down to medical reasons and the fact it wont heal. Absolutely absurd that a company the size of Ford is talking like this.

Colins crash in Corsica was not "Red Mist", it was down to getting crap on his tyres from the car in front which had dragged it out all over the road, just before a tight righthander that needed max grip.

Was Carlos's crash yesterday red mist? Of course not. The only really crazy piece of driving Colin has done in a long time was on the NetworkQ last year, he simply lost the plot on that. Before then he has been far from driving crazy.

OK, not red mist, but Colin can't be blameless, afterall, everyone passed through these situations through out the rally, most did so successfully... From my understanding, Colin was near 10/10ths pace at this point, perhaps if he had a little larger margin of safety in this section he would've made it...

Sounds like he was taking the risks he needed to be faster, and paid the price in this section... Hence some people's references to red mist...

Driving at the limit and driving with "red mist" are two totally diferent things. He was pushing hard but he didnt look like he was taking more risks or being more ragged than anyone else.

From the onboard, to me it looked like he got his line wrong on the corner prior to the one he went off and he had no way to recover from that because he had crap on his tyres. Thats the way i read it anyway.

That makes little to no sence to me. Wouldn't it cause more trouble and therefore longer to heel?

Wink It's a bluff

He's bluffing. Think about it. It makes him sound like a real hero at no risk. He can always change his mind.

He won't cut his finger off (but then again, that crazy Scottish blood... ya never know!)

I don't think it is BS. But it is not original. Ronnie Lott had his pinky removed so he wouldn't miss any chances to knock the head off any receivers

john -
Yeah, Colin pretty much said that's what happened in an interview - he cut a corner, and just had too much garbage on the tires, so he lost traction.
