People don't know how to merge up here. And most can't make a lane change without dragging their brakes. The QEW and 404 are pretty much the worst around.

Were you up here on business?

Cheap?

My insurance dropped 1200 after moving from Toronto to Guelph!

If you were around Pacific mall you probably saw some serious rolling hardware there. That area 'Richmond Hill' is quite wealthy and it seems they all know whats what w.r.t. cars. I swing through there 2-3 times a week and always see at least 2 WRX's, in the West end I see maybe 1 a month.

Default Explaination

We are not all rich, and you can't be too rich in Toronto, it just looks that way.

Everyone is in newer cars because of:

-road salt and lots of it.
-attrition due to accidents.
-emmsion testing gets lots of "clunkers" off the road.
-the popularity of leasing
-best prices and interest rates in years

The average age of a car in Canada is 8.5 years according to the auto association. Since that includes BC and other places with less or no salt, I'm guessing in greater Toronto it is much less. My old Sube is well maintained and strong (for a 1.8L ) but the engine and drivetrain will outlast the body. Getting more than 10 years out a a car here is an accomplishment.

My 1991 Loyale with 4WD and 5 speed could probably fetch $2000 in Toronto if I sold it. In BC I've seen them going for $5000 or more with the same set up. The only difference being the lack of road salt.

Its the same as the US I imagine. A car from Arizona would fetch more than one from Wisconsin?

On average I'd say Canadians drive cheaper and usually smaller cars than the US, just because we replace them more frequently.

Our auto association (CAA) www.caa.ca posts members dream cars as part of their ownership survey. We don't have very exciting dreams it seems:

RANK MODEL

1.Porsche 911

2.Volvo 70 Series

3.Toyota Camry

4.Chevrolet Corvette

5.BMW Z3/M-Roadster

6.Dodge Viper

7.Volkswagen Jetta

8.Jeep Grand Cherokee

9.Ford Mustang

10.Chrysler PT Cruiser

I would maybe dream about one of those, be seen driving a few more and have nightmares about the rest.

Rust protection first off. Not the kind your dealer offers which is a heavy tar type coating but a "light oil spray", I use Krown on my other car. Its supposed to get in all the nooks and crannies.

I bought my Subaru used and it was beginning to show signs of rust at only 5 years old. These rust protection programs work best if applied when the car is new and reapplied every year so I didn't bother with it.

My other car was bought new and is on year two of rust protection and just a month ago I was doing some work underneath and the exhaust mount bolts moved easily, not seized at all. Time will tell off course. Ask me again in ten years.

As for car washes I'm once a week at the drivethru whether I need it or not. There is some question as to whether letting the salt cake on a keeping the car dry is better than getting it wet but there are probably pros and cons to each.

Same with parking in your garage. Some say the warm moist air of your garage is worse than the cold dry air of outside.

There are lots of nice cars around. The funniest thing is seeing real high end automobiles running steel wheels without covers and big knobby winter tires. They look like beater taxis or unmarked police cruisers.
