Default Help! Car will not move

Here is my problem:

I go out and start the car (05 RS, 85000 miles, manual) and hold the clutch in for a second while the car is in neutral. When I let the clutch out, while in neutral, it lurches forward and stalls out. I try and again and does the same thing. It acts like it is in gear but is really in neutral. When I put it in any gear, it tries to move, but will not move more than an inch, no matter what the gear. It stopped when the hint of a smoking smell started. My first impression is the clutch, since it has not been replaced but I could very be wrong. Also, I have had trouble the last few weeks putting it in first gear when I need to pull away from a stop. What do you all think? Thanks for any help.

Luke

Have you gone in the engine bay and confirmed that the car is indeed in neutral? Can you feel it going through the gears?

Could be a disconnect between the shifter and the actual transmission, so you think it's in neutral, but it's not.

I can feel it going thru the gears, but will check the engine bay when get home tonight. The clutch does not slip though, so I am lost.

I have searched and I think it is a broken or bent fork in the tranny. If it was the e-brake then the car would not stall in neutral with the clutch out.
